Word always feels very much slower to me to be honest. A bit like typing
into a web form.

Uh, why?

Opening and just reading a document is not very much different in Notepad,
WordPad, Jarte, MS-Word, Libre Office Writer, and the list goes on and on.
Open, gain focus where you want it, read all.

Working with writing a document can be quite a bit more complex, but only if
you wish to apply formatting. Typing up a note in Word versus any of the
above if all you want is text is exactly the same in all of them. Type,
save, done.
