As Google itself states:  Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses

Even if you use matthew.dyer83 behind the scenes that boils down to matthewdyer83.   So does mat.the.w.dy.er.83.  Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses.  Your account, as far as gmail is concerned, is matthewdyer83.  You can stick dots in that wherever you like and, behind the scenes, it's still matthewdyer83.  Dotted addresses and the undotted version are all one and the same thing to Gmail.
