And so the beginning of the end of backward compatibility with Windows 7 begins . . .

From the Tech-VI Announce List:
Freedom Scientific Announces End of Installation on Windows 7, 8.x, and Windows Server prior to 2016

And it's coming before the end of this calendar year.

Those that have refused to update to Windows 10 should take very clear notice of this development, because it's not going to be limited to Freedom Scientific nor to assistive technology.  The dominoes were bound to begin falling, and you can and should upgrade, at no cost, as soon as possible.

Please report back on your impressions if/when you install Vivaldi again (presuming you've uninstalled it).  You're in a position to be able to give useful "before and after" information regarding how or whether these settings tweaks resolve the behaviors that are disliked.

Hey Brian. Thanks loads, this might be extremely helpful. I was kind of drawn to Vivaldi from the tiem I first read about it and definitely wanted to play around with some settings to see if it could be made a little nicer to use for “us”. It’s not terrible now but having the programme’s menu structure etc in the buffer with web data is certainly a bit disconcerting. I’ll poke around with some of this and see what happens.

Here are some settings tweaks I suggest to Vivaldi that will possibly make it more screen reader friendly.

Some are not specific to that, but are functions I like, pick and choose as you will.

In Settings

General Pane:

If desired, set Homepage or set Startup with to suit

You may wish to disable the confirmation dialogs for close of a Vivaldi window or exiting Vivaldi

User Interface Language and Preferred Date & Time Format can be tweaked here, too

The Automatically offer to translate pages checkbox is unchecked by default, I check it as it's a feature I like.

The latest version of Vivaldi comes bundled with an e-mail client (not webmail, but it's own email client interface), Calendar, and Feeds functionality.  The checkbox to enable these, or disable them, as a group is the last item in the General pane.  You should have been given the option to enable/disable at install, but if you change your mind in either direction, this is where you do it.

Appearance Pane:

The Menu section is what you're most likely to want to tweak.  Vivaldi defaults to what it calls Vivaldi Button menu position, which is down the left side of the screen, and Vivaldi Icon presentation for menu icons.  You may wish to activate the radio buttons for Horizontal menu position and/or menu icon instead.  The horizontal presentation is what we've been used to for decades now, across the top with the usual menus/submenus.  The only difference that's visible as far as menu icon choice is whether the generic "hamburger stack" menu button is used versus one with the Vivaldi logo.

You can also go crazy customizing either the horizontal or Vivaldi Button menus, but I don't.

Themes Pane:

Probably not relevant unless you have residual vision.  There are dark themes versus light themes, etc.

Start Page Pane:

Probably nothing unless you use the start page.

Tabs Pane:

Probably nothing, but there are scads of tweaks one can make, and you'd need to review the checkboxes and other controls available to decide for yourself.  Many of them have to do with visual presentation.

Panel Pane:

This could be a big one.  There is a set of control tabs that show up down the left side of the window by default and that are constantly on display.  Depending on whether you ever use these or not, you may want to do either one of two things, or perhaps both.  There is Panel Position option with a radio button for Left Side and Right Side presentation of the Vivaldi Panel, moving it to the Right side get it out of the way of traversal.  In addition, there is a Panel Options section, and there are several settings there you may wish to tweak:

Show panel toggle checkbox - unchecked by default, which means the control tabs are always on display, no matter which side you choose.  If checked, you get an additional single control that allows you to show or hide the whole thing with one click.  This might be a game changer for many.

Overlay panel checkbox - checked by default, which makes the control tabs panel overlay the browser content.  It may help quite a bit to uncheck this, but I haven't played with it with a screen reader.

Show Folder Counters checkbox - checked by default, and likely irrelevant if you are trying to get rid of the panel entirely.  These annoy me, though, so I uncheck.

There are quite a few additional panes, that I won't get into here.  If someone wants me to dig in to a specific one then please ask.  The above may make Vivaldi, and traversal in it, a lot more screen-reader friendly.

Re: My Brief Experiences Using Vivaldi With JAWS

Hello David.

Yes, that’s also been my experience using Vivaldi, and I commented on this on this list and elsewhere before. It’s not exactly a deal-breaker for me but I don’t’ find it great. I have a feeling you can reconfigure vivaldi to move all of its bars etc anywhere on the screen, so it may be possible to do this in a way that seems more convenient to us, but I haven’t played around with it enough to know the trick. One thing’s for sure – Vivaldi is extremely configurable so a “fix” on individual machines might well be possible.

Subject: [chat] My Brief Experiences Using Vivaldi With JAWS

Hello. As I’ve seen a recent reference on this list to the Vivaldi browser I wanted to write a bit of feedback on my own experiences in using it as of a few weeks ago. Please note that my experiences with it were in combination with JAWS.

I installed Vivaldi as I wanted a backup browser that I could use with its default settings in case I needed to access a page on a browser without all of the ad blocking and anti-tracking that I usually have enabled on Edge and Brave. However, I discovered that Vivaldi’s search box, address bar and menu buttons are actually being rendered in the screen reader’s virtual buffer right above the contents of the Web page that you happen to be reading. In my mind this is unacceptable so I uninstalled it. After doing so I was taken to a survey on Vivaldi’s Web site asking for the reasons why I uninstalled Vivaldi. I told them what issues I was experiencing and said that I would reinstall the browser once these issues are fixed. Brave initially had this same problem when it was in beta but they have since corrected it.

Re: Issue with directing headphone sound output while using NVDA

I don’t have a zoom account so I don’t know if you are placed where I am placed when you enter a meeting.

If you tab through all available items and don’t find this when you are in a meeting, let us know.

When I am in a meeting and tab around, I get to a butten that says something like audio settings, menu.  Press the button with the space bar and down arrow.  You must have the headphones connected to see the choice of more than one listening source.
You will see, when you down arrow, both your internal sound card and the one you have connected using a USB connection.  Press enter on the headphone source and your audio should change to the headphones.

You don’t have to wait until you are in a meeting with people.  You can join a test meeting using this page.

It might be a good idea to have the following instructions available in some other way than in this message    , for example, you might take notes or record them, but in some way, it might be easier to have them separate from the computer so you don’t have to keep alt tabbing between the message window and where you are working.  But I think you can alt tab repeatedly if you wish.
Major steps begin on new lines.
Go to the page using the link I gave in a browser and find the join button.  Activate it with the space bar.
I don’t know how much help you may or may not need after that point.
After a pause, tab to the open url button and press the space bar, at least that’s what you do using my browser.  I don’t know if your browser will show a different interface.
After you join, tab to and find the close button.  It closes the speaker and microphone test.
then tab around and find the join without video button and press the space bar.
After that, you should be on a button that says join with computer audio.
Press the space bar.
Now, you are in the meeting.
Tab around to find the audio settings menu button.  Press the space bar.
Down arrow through the options and press enter on the one you want.
