Reply links don't work properly in Groups.io messages when using an e-mail program
Gene
I just tried using the reply to sender link in two messages, each
from a different group. In both instances, using Thunderbird,
though an old version, a blank message opens in the browser but
there is no address nor is there a subject.
I'm reporting that in case others want to try it. I haven't checked to see where you report problems to Groups.io. If others confirm the problem, I may do so. I want to see if I might be using a setting that keeps the links from working properly. Gene |

Gene,
Are you using Thunderbird portable? If so, that's likely the root of the problem. The handing off of email address and subject is handled by Windows and it hands it to the app set as the email program. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 The psychology of adultery has been falsified by conventional morals, which assume, in monogamous countries, that attraction to one person cannot co-exist with a serious affection for another. Gene,
This reply is coming from Thunderbird 91.10.0 installed, after activation of the "Reply to Group" link in your message stating that you are using the portable version of Thunderbird (version unspecified). When I activate Reply to Group or Reply to Sender links in Thunderbird, the reply is coming from within Thunderbird. If I do the same thing in Outlook 2016, what gets fired up is the compose window of eM Client, which is currently set as my default email client under Windows 10. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 *The psychology of adultery has been falsified by conventional morals, which assume, in monogamous countries, that attraction to one person cannot co-exist with a serious affection for another. I'm not sure but are you saying that even though what happens is
different, the links work properly? It sounds like it.

I'm saying the links work properly.
Thunderbird on my system is clearly not passing this off to Windows, as everything stays resident in Thunderbird. Outlook, by contrast, is passing this off to Windows, as Windows then triggers the default email client to complete the compose and send. But everything works. Those two links in messages are dirt common mailto links with expected parameters included. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 The psychology of adultery has been falsified by conventional morals, which assume, in monogamous countries, that attraction to one person cannot co-exist with a serious affection for another. Since Thunderbird is handling the links, I wonder why Thunderbird
portable doesn't do so properly?

Gene,
It could be the version, perhaps there was a bug that's been fixed. It could be that the installed version uses certain dynamic link libraries (dlls) that are part of Windows that the portable version doesn't have access to. I really can't say precisely what it is. But this is an instance of something I've said, and not just about Thunderbird: there are times when the portable version of a program will behave differently than an installed version of the same program. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 The psychology of adultery has been falsified by conventional morals, which assume, in monogamous countries, that attraction to one person cannot co-exist with a serious affection for another. I remember that And I keep it in mind. Its very minor but its
probably an example. I'll try the current portable version to see
if what happens is different but I don't think it will be.

I got curious about this because I was going to tell a person on another list about the reply to sender links in Groups.io messages but I didn't know why they didn't work when I tried them. I now know that I can tell people to use them if an occasion comes up. Gene On 6/9/2022 7:19 PM, Brian Vogel wrote:

Brian's Mail list account
There are some odd things that can go on with links in email messages in different clients. I've seen things like them trying to open the incorrect browser, like I E and then that reporting the syntax is wrong, to the blank email you mention. I think it has something to do with Windows, but trying to sus exactly why it might work one time and not another is beyond me. Often a computer restart fixes the problem.
