Replacing Jarte
Carlos
Hello All
Since Jarte is no longer supported. Which lightweight word processors work well with NVDA and other screen readers? I do have Microsoft 365. But! Having to use Word to read documents that don't require special formatting is a bit too much for basic documents. And, Wordpad has some of the same bugs as other MS programs that love to crash at any given time! Thank You For any and all suggestions offered! |

Wordpad doesn't crash more than the occasional crash any program may
experience unless there is a problem. What do you want to do that
JARTE doesn't do? JARTE will read DOCX files if you get a
converter, though I don't think that is the right term, from
Microsoft. You can't edit and save a docx file in the docx format
but it reads them.

You may want to do things JARTE doesn't do but it still works well. Gene On 8/4/2022 9:15 AM, Carlos wrote:

Opening and just reading a document is not very much different in Notepad, WordPad, Jarte, MS-Word, Libre Office Writer, and the list goes on and on. Open, gain focus where you want it, read all. Working with writing a document can be quite a bit more complex, but only if you wish to apply formatting. Typing up a note in Word versus any of the above if all you want is text is exactly the same in all of them. I seldom use Word but I think people want a program that opens
faster. I don't know what the state is on fast current computers
but on computers I use, being somewhat old and slower, Word opens
much more slowly than Wordpad, Jarte, or other such programs.

Also, and again, this may no longer be the case, but I recall problems of slower responsiveness when moving around documents for screen-reader users using Word. I can only say that on my machines, I use small programs to read Word files because the programs open much faster and often responsiveness is better. Gene On 8/4/2022 9:55 AM, Brian Vogel wrote:

The faster and more modern the computer is the faster Word will open. I agree that the wait time is slower on older machines but on a fast machine it’s almost as fast as Wordpad or Notepad.

This may have been the case with NVDA on some machines but I think this has been largely dealt with, particularly on up-to-date systems. With JAWS there may have been slight differences between responsiveness in Word compared to Jarte or Wordpad but now the differences are almost imperceptible.

Word always feels very much slower to me to be honest. A bit like typing into a web form.
