searching for NVDA topics
Hi all, I'm posting this in the chat group because it's probably
something very simple that I'm missing! I know how to search the group archive and I often use that to find answers to things I can remember already having been asked. But I was going to search for a tutorial on using Google Docs, which I know I've seen discussed a few times ... and I can't find the search page anywhere! I'm sure there is usually a link near the part where you can view your personal account information, and the link to logout. But today there is no text at all that mentions searching! I have expanded all of the collapsible menues, and an option to search does not seem to appear for me! Could somebody tell me (or remind me) how to search for topics? Many thanks, Giles |

Giles,
All Groups.io group archive pages have the search box. Every once in a while there may be some sort of loading burp and that element doesn't show up, but it's rare. I'd go back and try again. It's located exactly where you describe when everything's working as it should. For something like Google Docs enclose that phrase in quotes so you don't get things with just Google or just Docs. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 19045 There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year-old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. Giles,
Also, these are two tutorials I've written about working with any group's archive pages in Groups.io: Searching a Groups.io Topics Page/Archive Browsing a Groups.io Topics Page/Archive --Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 19045 There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year-old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. I just checked a groups page. I don't have a search link. There is
a search edit field. I don't know how you are looking at the page
but if you look for an edit field, do you find the correct one?

Also, are you sure you are on the message page? I went to a group's home page and found nothing pertaining to search but when I followed the messages link from the home page, the edit link was there. Gene On 11/11/2022 4:41 PM, Giles Turnbull

Brian, I suspect that you are correct and that clearing my cookies will solve the problem. I am always reluctant to do that, because it wipes so many bits of website customisations that are operating ... but I just checked on one of my laptops (rather than my tablet) and there, below links to drafts, chats, subgroups, directories and calendars, is the search box that Gene suggested. None of those links, nor the search box are appearing on my tablet at the moment, nor is the text "search" when I try and find it using the NVDA+CTRL+f search. What is strange though, is that I almost never view NVDA using Google Chrome browser, but when I tried tonight the same links and text box were also missing. Chrome and Firefox don't share cookies, do they? Giles On 11/11/22, Gene <gsasner@...> wrote:

I'm sure they don't share cookies and I wouldn't remove cookies as a first step. The first thing you can do, which is nondestructive, is to block cookies. If you block all cookies, that will leave all your cookies, but sites won't see them so it will be as though you had deleted them.

But since you don't see the edit field using two browsers, I'm doubtful that cookies are the problem. Are you sure you are on the messages page for a specific group when you go to the site with the tablet? Gene On 11/11/2022 5:24 PM, Giles Turnbull wrote:

Note Well: I said clear browser cache. That's different from cookies. Those can stay in place.

The interesting thing is that the problem occurs on two browsers
that have been tried. I doubt that cache is the problem for that
reason. I think the first thing to be sure of is what page the
person with the problem is on. We need to be sure the person is on
a page containing messages from the list.

Gene,
It's not that I don't agree with you. However, when someone declares they have been doing this regularly, I have no reason not to believe them. That's why I overlooked the use of "link" for search edit box. For the NVDA Group, the archive is: https://nvda.groups.io/g/nvda/topics I mention this, and others, in the tutorial I posted the download link for. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 19045 There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year-old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. That's what makes this an interesting problem. You would expect the
person to be going to the right page. We'll have to see how things
develop.

Brian's Mail list account
Sometimes on Virgin I find that the local cache in Virgin is the culprit. I don't know a sure fire way to get this to be updated, but it does eventually clear, if you keep requesting the updatd page.

I suspect your original suggestions about clearing the Firefox cache will be correct. When I go to the group archive link that Brian provided, I don't get any search edit box. The way I normally search for a topic didn't produce an edit box using Chrome browser either ... but the link does produce one in Chrome. Thanks both for your help :) Giles when I go to that link, there is no search field. There is a filter option, and there are 20 of 100650 posts, with the option to move to different results pages. In none of the collapsed menus are there any search fields or links ... and, as I said earlier, I don't see search fields regardless of whether I'm using Firefox or Chrome browser. This is only happening on my tablet. On 11/12/22, Brian Vogel <britechguy@...> wrote:
