Program to list all program versions
Brian's Mail list account
It occurred to me from Brians crusade to get people to list versions of software where it is appropriate, that there has to be the lazy persons utility out there that lists everything installed, from Windows to the programme that does trivial stuff.
Then this could be saved and as long as it was run after any update its a simple case of selecting the items one might wish to include and pasting them into the email. There used to be any number of utilities like this, but over the years most seem to have become inaccessible in some way. Brian -- bglists@... Will Belarc Advisor satisfy this requirement?

I have no objections to using such utilities, if they do what is
wanted but at the same time, I think it is better to know how to do
this in Windows and Windows programs first and how to copy the
information to the clipboard from the about dialog using NVDA.

If you know these things, you will know a little more about Windows and a little more about NVDA. Learning how to use object navigation review enough to copy information from the about dialog may be useful at other times. Suppose a program is giving an error message in a dialog. You can use what you learned to copy the error message and paste it into a e-mail asking for help. I won't describe how to do these things in this message. I will on request, but I think it is an important point that in this instance and others, there are good reasons to learn the Windows and main programs such as browsers ways to do things before using convenience programs. Yeah, it does serve this function. Not sure what the limitations are off hand or if it can scan for portable versions, for instance. It can definitely be handy to have a list of all this stuff in one place. It will also let you know if it finds software that should probably be updated, and give you useful information about your network and OS, all in a convenient web page layout.

I had a look at that, but I think it misses some. It also tells you when it was last used, but often gets that wrong as well grin.

I know how to do that, but if you had a stable system keeping it all in a log made by software just seems to me to be easier and if it works well gets rid of the problem of missing something important.

Maybe I'd best get its latest version then. When I looked recently I found it hard to work out how to download it as the latest version, they were so intent on flogging their paid for offerings.

You don't miss important information if you know how to open the about dialog and move through it. I don't know what problems you may have but I've been using that method for years with no problem.

I can describe how, using NVDA, issuing one command after the about dialog opens moves you to the version number of the program which you can then review with object review keys and getting the version number is what is being discussed. If you want to hear the other information in the dialog, it is usually, not in all programs, read automatically when you open it. I love Belarc Advisor, but if you're trying to write a quick post and need to give program information, running the utility and then digging through the output report is always going to take way more time than a quick look at Help, About data. While it's not 100%, it's sufficiently close to it that ALT + H, A, is what's going to get you the about dialog for many programs. And version information is almost always the first thing that's shown. There is a reason this has been made so consistent across the majority of programs (but not MS-Office or many MS programs, where this shows up in either Options or Settings, for the most part). Saying that, "I have a problem with my computer," or, "I have a problem with NVDA," is akin to going to a doctor and saying, "I'm sick." What's going to happen (and should, but really shouldn't be necessary) is a series of questions asking for the specifics. Issues cannot be solved as broad abstractions. The clinician (regardless of context) must have the specifics. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 22621; Office 2016, Version 16.0.15726.20188, 32-bit; Android 12 (MIUI 13) Journalism 101: If someone says it’s raining and another person says it’s dry, it’s not your job to quote them both.
