can't install the 7-zip program

Hi, everyone,
Last night I tried to install the 7-zip program from the ninite site but kept getting a message that the installation failed. I wanted to zip up an album to share with a music list I’m on. Does it no longer work in windows 11? Just wondering.

With windows 11, it's not necessary to havve 7zip. Just highlight the files you want in your archive and open the context menu and choose add to archive.

Using what method? Either way, the archive .zip will be in the folder where you create it. So, you talk of zipping an album – if you’re, say, in your music folder, and you have a folder inside that that contains the album…zip up that folder, and the zip file will be in your music folder, unless you use an archiver and set it to store archives in a different location, which I’m pretty surey ou can do, but isn’t the default behaviour.

All the files should be in the same folder. Select the files you
want to zip. Then open the context menu.

Find send to and press enter. IN the submenu that opens, find compressed zip folder and press enter. A dialog will open telling you that the file is being zipped. When it closes, if you have the same experience as I do, you are at the zip file but you have to press escape to be in the list of files in the folder and to be able to move around. The zip file will be in the same folder as the original files. It will have the same name as one of the files that were zipped. Change the zip filename to whatever you want. Yeah windows can zip but 7z is a lot easier to handle. You shouldn't need ninite for 7zip, www.sf.net/projects/sevenzip/files. Click 7zip and then the latest version. Install the appropriate version x64 should be what you go for. The last version is 22.01. You will have to run the thing as admin in order to set options. I don't use it for much but it helps me with rar and other files. It can also access hidden files which can be usefull. Its also dangerous if you have others access to it because it can access hidden files and protected files but on the other hand if you need to kill old data like windows installs and temp files and know what you are at then its fine. Its easier than buggering about with folder options and such especially if things half bust like they have been with me at a time. 7zip is easier than doodling with that ,, run in admin and you can do simple opps. I also like the 7z format.

7-Zip definitely works under Windows 11. Even more specific than what Shaun offered, the direct download link for the latest version of 7-Zip 64-bit (which is what the vast majority would use) is: https://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/files/latest/download

Yeah, Winget is awesome. There’s a lot of software in that microsoft repository. And you can use it to update store apps too I believe.

You can do a lot more in 7z, but the original message said that 7z
is easier to handle and I disagree. What could be more simple than
a utility with one zipping action, compress to zip folder.

If you are using file explorer (I think it might be called) to find and select the files you want to include in the archive, the archive will normally be found at the bottom of that folder.

I agree jean. Of course if all you handle are zips thats fine. I like the 7z interface and handle everything from zips to rar archives. My geek cluub and hacker mates use 7zip because its a little better compression wize than windows zip and can be controled and we deal exclusively with the 7z format. The only time we deal with zips is for public use for standard users but yeah the other thing is that 7zip is shell dependant so if you need it. If you don't then thats fine. Its probably a geek thing but I do like it.

I seldom use 7zip and I use the portable version. It doesn't place items in the context menu. If I used it more, I might install it but for me, this is a very minor inconvenience. In your case, you should see items in the context menu when you are on a rar file. Open the context menu, and look for relevant items. Do you see items like extract here, extract and extract to?
