adding a gmail account to outlook

Sarah k Alawami

Hey yall. So I went to add my gmail account, or one of them to my outlook. I googled for what happens when the unable to sign in because you might be using an insecure browser dialogue comes up, and the article said  to turn on the less secure apps option. I would except tah setting is now no longer available at least on that particular account. I then read some more tips to  turn on some stuff in edge such as allow sites to open in internet explorer mode. So far nothing has worked. So how can I add these accounts to my desktop and my  laptop if I can’t sign in using my gmail address using outlook’s internal browser. The newest stuff I found was from 2021 which is not going to help right now.

If you are using anything earlier than Outlook 2016, it's messy to add a Gmail account.  If you're not, just go through the add account process in Outlook.  The Google OAUTH2 process is handled by Outlook while you're stepping through account addition.

You can't possibly be using an insecure browser if you're using the current versions of any of the major ones.

That’s the thing. I’m using office 365. I’ve tried to step through the process and get the unsecure browser after entering my email address. This on 2 compujters, both running office 365. I used to be able to do this.

I should add that on both system s I’m using Microsoft® Outlook® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2301 Build 16.0.16026.20196) 64-bit365 and I was able to do this aboutg 6 months ago.

Which browsers did you try.  You shouldn't get any such message with a modern browser.  I can't say what happens with an old one.

Ok, well we got somewhere. I added the one-time password after enabling 2 step verification per the rep’s instructions./ I got this instead when signing into my new account I’ve been trying to add for the past hour. Thius was the disability desk that was tgryting to help me btw. I don’t use one time passwords, ever, so this was a fiurst. Set ujp was easy, I wonder why it is braking though as all of my accounts seem to be adding except this one. At least I’m receiving the test messages when IU add tghem via the profile, but when I go and sign uin on outlook and get presented with that dialogue I can’g sign in using that internal browser thing.

I have found that Google are making stuff difficult for anyone wanting to use a client for their email. ON two different machines running the same client, both now need one time passwords with all that messing about that happens and one time codes that expire before you get to put them in.
Now I'm all for security, but sometimes if you make it too difficult to do, people just get fed up and use another email service with perhaps lower security.

It could be similar to the one we got for Windows 7. That has issues with google when you need to log in.
I'd suggest Firefox latest update, once all the stuff is in outlook that you need, aaybe its not needed any more. Not knowing how the system works in your case, I can only guess. It almost sounds like not only do you need a one time password for the website in that browser, but one for outlook and they are going to be different.
Several friends of mine had to get help from Dolphin as they use Dolphin Guide connect instead of a screenreader, and when you try to set up email its supposed to launch the bespoke browser to log in but you get similar errors now, to the one in this thread, and then the whole of guide froze up and in the end, they went and set up a Yahoo account instead.
Two steps forward, one step back.

that is not true.  You don't need one time passwords.  You need what is called an application specific password if you are using an e-mail program that is too old to use modern security protocols.  I got an application specific password and had no problems such as you describe.  If by codes you mean captchas, I had no problem getting one and solving the captcha with it.  If you have a modern e-mail client, none of this is necessary.  I strongly suspect you are using an older e-mail client, Windows Live Mail, perhaps, or Outlook Express.  You have said you use Outlook Express, though I believe you said you would use something newer on your new Windows 10 or 11 machine when you get it.

Absolutely correct.

But what you really need is to ditch any email client that can't support modern authentication.  It's getting downright dangerous to use insecure email clients these days.  There really does come a time that, no matter how much you may love some piece of software and hate losing it, that the proverbial band-aid needs to be ripped off.

I truly have never been in any other community where clinging to technological corpses is as strong a tendency as it has been in the blind community, which truly mystifies me.  And particularly in regard to things like email clients, where accessibility, on the whole, has improved as time has marched on.  And "Google friendliness" and integration of all modern authentication methods, not just Google's, has become standard.

In the immortal lyrics of The Bangles:  When it's over, when it's done - let it go!

Sarah,

Then call back.  You got a less than competent rep.  Straight through beginning to end setup of Gmail accounts within Outlook has been in place for years now.  If it's not working, something's wrong, and that most likely lies in the M365 installation.  You do not need (though, of course, one could use) an app specific password.  That's not "the right way" to do it, for lack of a better way of putting it, and should be wholly unnecessary.

There is a vague possibility that it could be an underlying corruption in your Windows instance as well.  You might want to do a repair install on Windows to see if that straightens things out.

Things may be fine for now, and even stay that way, but something's off that will, eventually, rear its ugly head again.

I dun no,  I rfead about some of this and it seems as though the rep is on the right track.. someone was having trouble in 2021 to 2022 and this is how they solved the issue as well with the app specific password. I’ll contact them again after workand see. I have to use outlook as my work does not use web email, at all. Plus I love the way outlook works, except for now. It’s now two gmail accounts I cannot add even with an app specific password. We’ll see if I get a different repl.. He even remoted inand saw what was going on.

I have no idea what the person means by one time use.  An application specific password is used instead of your usual password and your e-mail program uses it to sign in every time you open the program and it fetches and sends mail to your account.  It is used as often as your regular password would be.

that is not true.

Are you talking about what comes up when you follow a link in an e-mail or does it come up at other times?

I can't. It's an internal browser that comes up, not the one you normally
access.  that is, it's not the browser you have set by default. it's always
been like this since maybe 2021 when I started using outlook.

It could be similar to the one we got for Windows 7. That has issues with
google when you need to log in.
I'd suggest Firefox latest update, once all the stuff is in outlook that
you need, aaybe its not needed any more. Not knowing how the system works in
your case, I can only guess. It almost sounds like not only do you need a
one time password for the website in that browser, but one for outlook and
they are  going to be different.
Several friends of mine had to get help from Dolphin as they use Dolphin
Guide connect instead of a screenreader, and when you try to set up email
its supposed to launch the bespoke browser to log in but you get similar
errors now, to the one in this thread, and then the whole of guide froze up
and in the end, they went and set up a Yahoo account instead.
Two steps forward, one step back.

It's not a browser per say. It's an internal browser. Probably a model of
edge according t5o what I've been reading.

Which browsers did you try.  You shouldn't get any such message with a
modern browser.  I can't say what happens with an old one.

Hey yall. So I went to add my gmail account, or one of them to my outlook. I
googled for what happens when the unable to sign in because you might be
using an insecure browser dialogue comes up, and the article said  to turn
on the less secure apps option. I would except tah setting is now no longer
available at least on that particular account. I then read some more tips to
turn on some stuff in edge such as allow sites to open in internet explorer
mode. So far nothing has worked. So how can I add these accounts to my
desktop and my  laptop if I can't sign in using my gmail address using
outlook's internal browser. The newest stuff I found was from 2021 which is
not going to help right now.

I think there is some way you may be able to get a one time use password if you can prove you are who you say you are in Google when working with an account but that has nothing to do with a user specific password.
