Any social chat mailing lists out there on groups io

Daniel McGee

Hi all

Am subscribed to quite a few tech lists on groups.io However, was just wondering if there are any social chat groups on this platform which people are subscribed too.

Any suggestions most welcome.

Regards

Daniel

You might want to have a look at results from the Groups.io Group Search Page after supplying a couple of words for areas of interest.  There are all sorts of social chat groups, but most tend to be at least somewhat focused on something of common interest to their members.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year-old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged.  One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

I have to say, that there do not seem to be that many that are not focussed. I would point out that although many think them dead, Usenet groups still exist, and if you can find a client, Say Thunderbird, then there are some that are basically chat line types of things, but you have to realise in most cases these are not moderated and you sometimes get spam, but then there is a delete button and comprehensive rules you can apply in the clients.
I tend to word the old codgers groups, usually with sheds, ie man sheds, and in my case the UK ones and they might be talking about folk rock or just general experiences etc.
I've not seen such things on any mail list, since they do tend to be moderated and you just don't get the spontaneity. Things like Twitter is all really algorithm based, and Facebook does have groups too, but these tend to be targeted at localised communities.

And in my observation that has always been the case, and I started into all this when Usenet was king.

The idea of a truly general chat group is pretty much bound to die, much like trying to make small talk at a party with people you don't know and where you have no common interests predominate.

Using the search page I mentioned and putting in just the word "chat" uncovers a myriad of chat-focused groups, but most with some sort of starting point, though a couple claim to be "just chat."  Membership numbers on those groups tends to be under 100 people, often under 25 people.  If I put in "blind" I get 7 pages of groups, some of which are chat focused but with no subject, and group membership tends to be low, but I stopped at page one of those seven.

It's hard to get "general chat" going among a group of strangers spread out across the world without some common interest at least to draw them all in first.  Not unlike life, really.

A few years ago, I was subscribed to a chat groups on groups.io which had fairly decent traffic. I can't remember it's name now but I do remember the Lady's name whom ran it. I think her name was Maria.

Does that name ring a bell to anyone here? I wish I could recall this groups name. Otherwise, agreed, that "blind "chat" search brings only one page of results back for me with fewer than 25 members sadly.
