Audacity: A full-service digital audio editor and recorder
Because this could possibly turn into a long and involved topic, rather than post it on the main group and hope a "one liner" won't take off I'm starting it here.
A question came up about putting marks into audio that allow one to move back and forth to specified points and continue playback. If one uses Audacity as a player, and you can, this can be done with ease. See: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/navigation_tips.html#labels Audacity is an insanely feature rich program, and even though I've used it I've never come close to using most of the features, just the ones I needed for the project at hand. The big plus is that it has keyboard shortcuts for virtually every function and has been discussed on other venues as being very accessible indeed. I just wanted to make folks aware of this program and invite anyone who may actually use it via screen reader to jump in and offer information about their experiences in using it. It may prove to be "just what you need" for a very wide variety of audio-related needs. The Audacity Users Manual (which is very long, but very well laid out) can be found at: https://manual.audacityteam.org/index.html The software itself is available here: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/ (versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux are available) -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year’s fashions . . . ~ Lillian Hellman, Letter to House Un-American Activities Committee, 5/19/1952 |

You can use it as a player and I haven't used most
of its features. But the problem with using it in that way is that when
you are dealing with a compressed format, every file must be uncompressed before
it is played. this makes it impractical for playing long files because you
have to wait while the file is decompressed instead of instantly being
played. and if you are playing a playlist, which I haven't looked into but
if you can, you would have the same problem. Each file would have to be
decompressed.

Gene,
There are, of course, certain drawbacks. But if I were to be using Audacity to be listening to the same material repeatedly during some relatively short timeframe, I'd just save it as an Audacity project file after the initial decompression. If someone wants or needs the ability to easily jump forward or backward to specific points in an audio file there are very, very few programs that make this as easy to manage than Audacity. Any individual would have to play with it to see if it can suit their needs, so I wanted to make people aware of it since it had not been brought up and is well-known to be exceedingly accessible and feature-rich, and at zero cost. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year’s fashions . . . ~ Lillian Hellman, Letter to House Un-American Activities Committee, 5/19/1952 |

You can do this also in Goldwave of course. but many want a stand alone player and as far as I can tell only the one I posted the read me of is around just now. Its interesting to note that some podcast makers and grabbers seem to allow bookmarking on mobile devices, but I've yet to see anything like that on a pc.

As you say editors have to have it as part of what they do, but its a bit like having a 747 as a commuter jet. Brian bglists@... Sent via blueyonder. Please address personal E-mail to:- briang1@..., putting 'Brian Gaff' in the display name field. ----- Original Message -----

As much as I'd love to say that there is a "compact and tidy" tool for this task, that does not appear to be the case on the PC side. It will be interesting to see what reports come back on that Winamp add-on (as I've now determined that's what it is) and whether it still works and does the job required. I would generally avoid the "747 as commuter jet" type recommendation, but have seen instances where folks are dealing with hugely long audio files where they need the ability to repeatedly jump back and forth, over long distances, and to have labels "that make sense" as a part of that. So far, even though its other capabilities are gross overkill, Audacity has suited that particular task very well. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year’s fashions . . . ~ Lillian Hellman, Letter to House Un-American Activities Committee, 5/19/1952 |
