Digital Voice Recorders

Hello All,

I just began working with a new client today who is not (and does not want to be) a smartphone user who has an Olympus VN-702PC digital recorder that is proving difficult for him to use.  Most of this stems from the fact that menus are not announced beyond a beep.

I have used Olympus models in the past that did announce menu items as you navigated, but it's been some years since I last had to evaluate handheld digital recorders for use by someone who's blind or visually impaired.  I have to presume that some among our membership still use these purpose-dedicated devices and know which one or ones are more accessible and easy to use than others.  So I am soliciting input regarding what makes and models may be favored among the membership.

P.S.: This query has also been posted on the Blind Android Users group

Let me hasten to add that I *do* like cologne.  I just much prefer it as a subtle hint instead of an aromachete.

Well since Olympus has I hear discontinued the making of recorders, I’m not really sure if there Is anything. There is the lsp400 I think and one that came out in 2018, that speaks the time and everything else but I can’t remember the model

That doesn't appear to be correct:  https://explore.omsystem.com/us/en/audio

I don't know whether any of these models is accessibility friendly, though.

Jackie,

Thanks.  I had actually taken a look there, but wanted to solicit broader input just in case other options are available, and might be considered preferable.

I suspect we may end up with the Olympus DM-720 when all is said and done.  I've always loved the Olympus line of digital recorders, but didn't want to allow my preference to hold sway if there happens to be something better.  In this space, though, I suspect that options are narrowing rather than broadening.  If the client I'm working with were a smartphone user, or willing to be one, I would have instantly recommended looking at various recording apps to determine both accessibility and "what works best" for him as an individual.

By the way, I'd also be happy to hear about recorder apps that anyone might be using and likes.  It won't apply to this specific client, but it's helpful to have these rattling around in the mental tumble dryer to get caught in the mental lint trap when I want it.  (Of course, who ever gets the "mental lint" they want, when they want it!)

Eltrinex V12Pro was another fully speaking dictaphone that I had looked at a
few years ago but not got around to buying.
I don't know if it's still around. I'll have a look.

I'd just like input directly from someone who's used it, as it's a brand I have zero familiarity with and it's pricey at around $220.

Since we're talking somewhat about the Olympus recorders, I'm wondering if anyone has the step-by-step instructions to get the voice guidance system working on the Olympus DM-520?  I bought one off eBay to replace my broken one.  But I can't seem to get it talking.

Thanks.

I am aware that Jonathan Mosen has tested quite a few of these devices, some more professional, and from what I can deduce, some are more accessible than others. These seem to be aimed at pod cast makers and include quite a bit of editing as well as just recording.
If its a phone, then I think there are several ones for I Phones as long as you use external mikes. This is where we need to define if these are memos or intended for broadcast.

For clarity's sake:  This is meant to be used as a simple verbal note-taking device.  No complex editing capabilities are needed.

I also have a strong preference for "over the counter" options when such are suitable simply due to the greatly increased cost of niche devices (whether that niche is about blindness or about use for things like podcasting, medical transcription, etc.)   A "plain vanilla" digital recorder with voicing of menus/functions is the extent of what's needed.
