Does GMail have a catch all feature?
Hi all,
Does Gmail have some kind of catch all feature? I get e-mail sent to my regular address which is pranav.lal@... but also to pranavlal@.... Is there a way of disabling this feature? Pranav |

Pranav,
No, because those are not two different addresses (at least not under Gmail, and it's not alone). The best way I can put it is "punctuation doesn't count" as far as a Gmail address goes. You could also send to pr.an.av.lal@... and it would end up in pranavlal@... and pranav.lal@... because all three refer to the same mailbox. You cannot use punctuation to differentiate accounts under Google, all of Google. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. |

I thought I'd go in search of "the official word from Google" this afternoon, and found it:

Hi Brian,
Many thanks for finding the authoritative source. This is a major annoyance for me because a large chunk of spam that I am getting is on my non-dotted address.
Oh well, time to step up the migration.

Well, isn't Gmail sending it straight to Spam? If it isn't, a few activations of the spam designation button on actual spam messages tends to train the Gmail filter pretty darned quickly.

I guess if you used pop3 to collect the mail you could filter it any way you liked. I tend to do this on the pc using a client but still leave it as standard on the phone simply deleting anything left after the automove of the mail when pop3 is also used.

As I have said before, though very reliable email, Googles differences to the way other email systems work can be rather disconcerting. Brian -- bglists@... I always have thought this policy and practice makes infinite sense. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. |

So, just a question, but if I were to send amessage to my matthew.dyer83@... address and I forgot to add the dot for example, matthewdyer83@..., would I still receive it or is this translated as a different address? Thanks. Just wondered since we are talking about it.

Matthew,
As Google itself states: Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses Even if you use matthew.dyer83 behind the scenes that boils down to matthewdyer83. So does mat.the.w.dy.er.83. Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses. Your account, as far as gmail is concerned, is matthewdyer83. You can stick dots in that wherever you like and, behind the scenes, it's still matthewdyer83. Dotted addresses and the undotted version are all one and the same thing to Gmail. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. |

I want to add that I am also one who appreciates this feature. It is a great way to filter out emails from individuals you minimally trust. Another tip is to add the plus sign, followed by any phrase at the end of your email address, before the @gmail.com. I do this for each company I sign up for. This way, I can easily set up filters to catch such emails, and I immediately know where spammers got my email address from. For instance, nimerjaber1@... (my email address) might become nimerjaber1+amazon@... if I am giving Amazon my email address. ALl emails go to the same place, but I can set up filters to move anything with '+amazon' in the 'To' field into an Amazon label, and subsequently either archive or delete any such emails. Thanks. Nimer,
I was unaware that you could append a plus sign plus whatever to your email address and still have it resolve correctly! I've been using Gmail almost since the day it hit the streets and had never heard about this. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. |

Yep, I do this to circumvent the one email per twitter account at times. I also did this for my school. I actually never thought of filters, I could do that at least for the incoming stuff for my marrie12 plus aliases if I can remember them. I love those, they have come in handy for all 3 of my gmail accounts, or is it 4 now that I use.

This has actually been around since I can remember, since about 2007 or so. It really does come in handy. See prior post. I have had this very email since 2006 if I recall, and I really love what gmail has become.
