Email Client and Other Things in Signatures

Hello guys,
In some messages I read, I have noticed that some people have in their sigs things like
"Sent from Thunderbird"
"Sent from my iPhone"
And the one I really liked
"Sent from the Dark Side of the Moon".

Is there anything I need to/should do in order to have something like that in my sig or I just type it manually?
Also, I notice that some of these sigs come along with a link to said client, for example, "Sent from (link) Thunderbird". How is it done?

Thanks for any help and my apologies if it's a too silly question :)

Cheers,

How one does what you're seeking to do is directly dependent on the e-mail client you wish to do it under.

Pick one (unless it's on a Mac or iPhone) and I can probably tell you how to set it up.

And the answer to your overarching question, "No, you don't have to type a signature manually.  The whole point of the signature feature is to get around this need."

To add yet another wrinkle, Groups.io has a signature feature where you can create a fully formatted signature (see mine, with various fonts and colors) and you can elect to have this attached when you post via the web, post using e-mail, or both.   I've never seen anyone use a signature in their e-mail client and also under Groups.io for e-mail posting.  Doing both would probably give "interesting" results, in the sense of the ancient Chinese curse, "May you live an interesting life."

Brian,
Because of the other question I just asked, now you know I'm using Thunderbird :)

Actually when I asked about typing it manually I was referring to the signature's field itself, not to each email I couuld send.

In other words, I was asking, is there any way of including "Sent from Thunderbird" or something like that on my signature caused by the program itself, rather than myself typing? Any checkbox to check regarding show it or not?

I've never played with the groups.io signature. Can you help me with it? Does it accept html tags like my current signature?

Marcio,

For Thunderbird, first read through this support page, and see if your questions are answered:  https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/signatures

For Groups.io, I am going to presume you know how to log in to the website, if not, have a look at, Controlling the Messages You Receive via E-Mail from Groups.io (docx), just the beginning, that tells you how to set up your Groups.io account for the website if you've only used the e-mail interface.

-  Go to the group archive (which is also the active forum) page for the group for which you wish to create your signature.  I'll presume this group, the NVDA Chat Subgroup, for the rest of the example.  Its page is:  https://nvda.groups.io/g/chat/topics
- Navigate to the Subscription link, which is always a part of the control links on a group forum/archives page, and activate it.
- At the top of the subscription page is a section entitled Email Delivery which contains a series of radio buttons that allow you to choose how you receive your messages.  You're going to go past this to the next section, entitled Signature
- The very first two items in that section are the checkboxes for whether you want to use your Groups.io signature when web posting or e-mail posting.
- Immediately following that is the edit box, plus the controls associated with it, for you to create your signature.  The controls are for things like Bold, Italic, etc.  You can explore 'em.
- IMPORTANT:  If you prefer to put your signature together in a word processor like MS-Word, you can then just copy it and paste it in to the Signature edit box.  I do this because I can use a lot more fonts, colors, etc., in MS-Word and all of those attributes get put into the signature HTML so it will appear precisely as it did in your word processor.  I also find it easy to set up links in MS-Word.
- At the bottom of the Subscription page is a Save button.  You must activate it in order for your changes on this page to be saved and take effect for future posts.

Brian,
I'm going to see whether it worked. At any rate, thanks in advance for all of this really detailed help :)

Now, still the question: Does groups.io support HTML tags?
I see it has a rich text editor, but since you said that it will support if I just paste my signature from a Word file and I first asked it, if I type on that field, something like:
<a href="http://google.com.br">Google is your friend</a>
will it work or my HTML tags will appear as part of the text?

Wow it's really weird!
Apart from my signature appearing at the very end of a message, it didn't do what I wanted it to do!
While I wanted to show a text in place of the link for my Facebook profile, as my Thunderbird signature does, all it did was put the link with the text right away. :(

I guess I'll stick to this one!

Marcio,

I am not proposing putting the signature text in to the Groups.io signature box using HTML code, but by having the stuff formatted as you want it, including click-through link, in MS-Word.

It appears to me that your test was meant to present the following:  Google is your friend

And as you can see, it can be done in Groups.io whether in the message body or signature.

Marcio,

By the way, do the following in MS-Word to stage the click through link part of your signature.

1.  Enter whatever you want as far as text that's not the link.
2.  Enter the link text, then select that text, then hit CTRL+K
3. In the Edit Hyperlink Dialog, in the Address field you'll be placed in by default, enter the URL
4. Navigate to the OK button.
5. Select all of your signature text, including your click-through link and copy it.
6 On the Groups.io Subscription page, in the Signature edit box, paste it.
7. Save it.

After that see what happens when you use it to post via groups.io

Brian,
The thing I'm not understanding is: how exactly you are doing it? Did you paste from Word this part of the end of your message or did you set up it through the groups.io's richtext?
Again, I just wanted to know if I could use HTML tags on this editor because for me it would be way more easier. But I'll try doing the Word thing if there's not another way.

Marcio,

I do the entire setup of the signature in MS-Word, including any link.  Then I copy the entire thing and just paste it into the Signature edit box of groups.io and save it.

Then it appears, in standard signature format, following a line that contains only two hyphens and a space, in every message I post to Groups.io.  I do my posting via the web interface, but have tested out the groups.io signature feature via e-mail, too.  And if you're relying on it then you do not want to have a signature set up in your e-mail client, or else you'll end up with one signature stacked on top of the other.  You either do your signature in your e-mail client, or you do your signature via the Groups.io mechanism, but not both.

Brian,
I just found out that my Wordpad won't let me insert any link on the text I'm editing.
I think it's because it's the Wordpad, and MAYBE we aren't talking about the same Word.
Well I'll play a bit more with the groups.io signature and won't bother you nor the list with this question anymore.
Still don't know if I can use HTML tags on that editor, but that's ok :)

Just one more question before I go, when I set up my signature, I have to do it for each group I'm in?
I ask because you used a specific group as an example, so I got a bit confused with this.

I think this is being made far more complicated than is necessary.  When you write a signature in an e-mail program and write the link in the usual http:/;/www. etc. manner, or maybe even the www. etc. manner, I don't know what the minimum is that is necessary, any standard e-mail program will recognize that syntax as a link.  in e-mail messages, it is standard practice for people to just paste an address into a message from the address bar or type it accurately and it is recognized by e-mail programs.

This is the exact same thing.  A signature is nothing out of the ordinary.  It is just more text in a message and the same syntax will be recognized as a link by the receiving e-mail program..

Marcio,

Since the groups you participate in on Groups.io can often be "completely separate worlds" you have a subscription page, including signature, for each group.  I have a different signature on this subgroup than I have on the main group and all other groups as well.

Gene,

Many do not want to use "naked URLs" but want their links presented as click-through/activation text.  Like these:  If you want to use a search engine that gives you more privacy than Google, then try DuckDuckGo.

Doing that is what I am trying to describe.  You are absolutely correct that pasting a naked URL in its usual http or https format will generally result in it being automatically presented as a clickable link with the formatting being done by the e-mail client.

Wordpad and Word are definitely not the same thing.  In a quick check just now it does not appear that Wordpad even has an Insert Link function.

Then the question is, what does marcio want?  My impression is that he wants to have links written as addresses from an example given earlier in the thread.  Of course, if he wants to learn this just to learn it, that's different but if not, just writing the link is fine.

Brian and Gene,
Precisely what I'm wanting is a click-through text.
Now I know just how to do it, the problem is, I know how to do it using HTML tags. Since I can't use Wordpad (which is the only Word I have) and I don't know whether groups.io signature supports HTML tags, I'm almost giving up on this.
However, as I said, I won't bother the list with this question anymore.

Thanks guys :)
