Getting the Thunderbird preview pane back

Mary Otten

My computer had to have windows reinstalled. Therefore, it meant NVDA and Thunderbird and my other programs had to be reinstalled. Therefore, I have the newest NVDA that just came out, and no add-ons. I’ve got some issues with Thunderbird that might be solved if I can get the right add-on back. If I can find it. But the first thing I would like to do would be to get my preview pane back. This Thunderbird is not the same as the one I had. Pressing F8 used to toggle the preview pane. It apparently does not do that anymore. At least NVDA plus down arrow does not read the preview pain like it used to. Any ideas?

It does toggle the preview pane.  You need an add-on to have that command work.

I don't know if the Mozilla apps enhancements add-on has been made compatible with the newest NVDA.

I would urge you to use Thunderbird portable.  Back it up when it is configured the way you want it.  Then, if you get a new computer or you have to reinstall Windows again, you can simply copy the program from the drive where it is backed up to the new Windows or new computer and it will work just as it did on the machine you had it on before.  You will need the Mozilla Apps Enhancements add-on, but the program will be configured just as you want it.

Oh great. I guess I had that add on  so long I forgot it was one. I believe there are two different ones that worked in the last version of NVDA for 2022. I believe the one I had was mozilla app enhancements. Am I correct that the new things are all going to the new nvda store, so I need to get there to find this add on that will bring back that pane and maybe some other stuff too?

the first thing I would do is do a Google search, or whatever search engine you use, for Mozilla apps Enhancements, NVDA add-on and see what results come up.  A new version may be available in the store but it may not.  It may be available on the NVDA add-ons site or on the Spanish site.

You may want to wait for information from someone who knows where the compatible version is, if there is one yet.

I don't know about other possible add-ons for Thunderbird that may be used in NVDA.  There is an add-on you install in Thunderbird itself that let's you use first letter navigation in the folders list.

If you use Thunderbird Portable, the add-on will be backed up when you back up the program and will run when you copy the program to whatever location you wish to run it from.

Its quite complicated as the feeling is that somewhere the add on and tbird version are compatible, but the very latest Tbird may not be completely.

Certainly there was an updated add on written as I remember downloading it, so I would advise making sure that the very latest version of the add on updater is installed first, then see what pops up.

I just downloaded and installed the add-on from this page:
https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/mozillaScripts.en.html

It is compatible with the latest NVDA.  I didn't try all the commands but having the reading pane shown and using NVDA key down arrow to read the message body works, as it should when you are on a message that is displayed in the reading pane and you haven't pressed enter on the message.
Control shift 1 through 4 works as described.  Until someone finds otherwise, I would proceed on the basis that the add-on works as expected with the current version of NVDA.  That is the version I tested with.

Yes, it does.  I'm running Thunderbird 102.9.1, and F8 as the show/hide message pane (AKA preview pane) remains and works as it always has.

As a general point single press hotkeys such as this one almost never get changed.  Keyboard shortcuts seldom get changed, but will every once in a great while, and typically only a couple of them if extensive changes are made to the software where "old and more seldom used" shortcuts are wanted for "new and expected to be more frequently used" functions.

I can also use NVDA + Down Arrow to restart (as it starts on its own when I first gain focus on the message pane) a read all in the message pane.

There is a "blip" on the community add-ons page at the moment where that information is not listed.  But if you look at the download link it will download version 1.18, and the NVDA Add-Ons Directory clearly shows that version 1.18 is compatible with NVDA version 2023.1.

But you should not need this add on strictly to toggle the message pane on/of nor to read what's in it.

This is a situation where performing The Most Basic Troubleshooting Steps for Suspected NVDA Issues

comes first.

If that doesn't do it, then my next step(s) would be:

1. Using DISM (Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management) and SFC (System File Checker) to Repair Windows 8.1, 10 & 11

2. Performing a Windows 10 or 11 Repair Install or Feature Update Using the Windows ISO file

If #1 fixes the issue, #2 is unnecessary.

Lastly, uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird.  This step might go between steps 1 and 2 above, but for myself, it would be the last resort.

In a previous message, referring to the Mozilla apps enhancements add on, Brian said:

Well, I just installed the add on, and now the preview pane reads as it did before. Also, the description for that add on states that with this installed, you can use nvda down arrow to read that pane if it is enabled. Why would they say that if this were not a specific feature made possible by that add on?

Anyway, it is working now, which is a good thing. <smile>

Mary,

I believe I am incorrect in what I said before.  I had sworn I had nuked Mozilla Apps Enhancements from the add-ons I have installed, but in reviewing them, I had not, so it was in place during my testing.

In any case, though, F8 is not a command that comes from Mozilla Apps Enhancements, so toggling the message pane on/off should not depend upon that add-on.

But you do need the add-on to do what is being discussed.  If you don't have the message opened and you issue the command NVDA key down arrow, you will hear the contents of the reading pane.  If you don't have the add-on, you won't.

No, it isn't dependent on whether the add-on is present but the reading pane must be on for the NVDA key down arrow command to work.
