How can this be possible?

I notice on recent updates of NVDA, the closing sound is playing while the start up sound starts to play. Why does NVDA not get confused where to return to when its playing sounds from the closing copy and the new version starting up?

These sounds are played:

1.  By two different instances of NVDA.
2.  Based on information from others (as well as your observation) are played asynchronously.  This means that a call is made to play the sound and the program continues merrily on.  When it gets played is when the operating system gives a time slice to the sound player, which is a separate thing from NVDA itself.

In theory, it's possible for the startup sound of a newly fired up instance of NVDA to be played prior to the shutdown sound for one already closed depending on when each of the respective players are handed their time to play by Windows.  It certainly wouldn't be common, at all, but it can happen when any process is asynchronous from another.

Well it always happens here but it seems to cause no ill effects. I guess it means the system is buffering OK and there are no resource hogging things running.

Sorry Dave, I can't do that.
Don't judge. I've never, ever used virtual recorder in my life, I've heard
of it however for what ever reason thought it was abandoned or inaccessible
or something, that was as of about 20 years ago. As this surface is only for
work stuff when I travel or note taking, I really don't want to put anymore
than necessary on it.

Actually I looked up virtual recorder and it looks like it has been
abandoned. Sadly, the only thing about it is on that nasty site called blind
help. I won't link to it but try
Virtual recorder site:blindhelp
In a google search. Or the full domain after site then colon. That was a tip
taught to me by a fellow google searcher who happens to be my teacher.

Hah...I heard that first line in the Hal voice.
I got Goldwave and Audacity and even Reaper over here (though I still have

to talk about Virtual Recorder some but, indeed, it's long abandoned. Might
still work. But is it even capable of using Wasapi?

Whatever the case regarding development, there is a version available that was modified by the late Carlos to make it more accessible.  You may have to get it from individuals, I know nothing about what is offered on the Blind Help Site.  Whatever the case, I use the program and will send a link to get it using We Transfer if requested.

As modified, the program has three settings for source:
Sound card, what you hear, which is Wasapi, (spelling) and both, which allows you to record using your microphone using the sound card and other material simultaneously.

Hah...I heard that first line in the Hal voice.
I got Goldwave and Audacity and even Reaper over here (though I still have
to learn how to use it properly) to do all my recording needs. People used
to talk about Virtual Recorder some but, indeed, it's long abandoned. Might
still work. But is it even capable of using Wasapi?

Sorry Dave, I can't do that.
Don't judge. I've never, ever used virtual recorder in my life, I've heard
of it however for what ever reason thought it was abandoned or inaccessible
or something, that was as of about 20 years ago. As this surface is only for
work stuff when I travel or note taking, I really don't want to put anymore
than necessary on it.

You can use virtual recorder for this of course.

record it some time with my phone, you know, gorilla style lol! I do
have some updating to do, man that thign is fast! I guess my system
also buffers ok as well.

These sounds are played:

1. By two different instances of NVDA.
2. Based on information from others (as well as your observation) are
played asynchronously. This means that a call is made to play the
sound and the program continues merrily on. When it gets played is
when the operating system gives a time slice to the sound player,
which is a separate thing from NVDA itself.

In theory, it's possible for the startup sound of a newly fired up
instance of NVDA to be played prior to the shutdown sound for one
already closed depending on when each of the respective players are
handed their time to play by Windows. It certainly wouldn't be
common, at all, but it can happen when any process is asynchronous
from another.

A podcast on that beast would be very nice. It is a powerful tool.
