Is it Possible to Transfer Groups.io Ownership to Another User?

Hi. I have two groups on Groups.io that I’m no longer wanting to manage, moderate or maintain. As I want to ensure that the archives remain available I don’t want to remove the group but would instead rather see them owned by someone else. I don’t see an obvious way to do this although I know I can give someone ownership privileges. If I do this does the group still have to be connected with my account?

As I understand it, you can make anyone you want an owner so you will have more than one owner.  After that, you can leave the list.  I don't think you have to change your status first.

Others may know more definitely, but I know that a group has to have one owner.  So if you make someone else an owner, I see no reason you can't just leave the list.

Gene,

You are correct.  The way "the torch is passed" is by finding someone (or several someones) who wants to take over then assigning them the owner role.  At one time, somehow, I was the owner of this group, which was never the intent, so I assigned Nimer the owner role and myself the Moderator role (which removed me as being owner as part of that process).

Whoever has the owner role can grant or revoke it from anyone else, so you generally grant the owner role to your successor and then have them revoke it from you.  This way you are sure that they have the owner role, as they can't revoke yours unless they also have it.  If they revoke yours then you're just a normal member afterward.

I've honestly never tried to just unsubscribe with the owner role still active, but I do believe I remember that this is not permitted by the Groups.io software if only one person has the owner role for a given group, but may be possible if more than one person does.

By the way, if the groups are premium groups where you're paying for them, and they are to remain as such, make sure you arrange with Groups.io to change the payment information for the group to the new owner as part of this process.
