looking for VoiceWear voices

Mary Otten

I have the K1000 program, which is quite old by now, of course. It refuses to install for some reason, although it did install on Windows 10 before. But now with this Windows 10 newly installed, it is not doing so. The only thing I really wanted out of there as the James voice, which I believe was produced by a company called Voicewear. Not sure of spelling, but I tried googling a couple of different options to see if I could find it. I was hoping the voice might be available somewhere as a paid for stand alone add on, or even as part of a package. But I'm having no luck. Does anybody know if this voice was ever made available? The only voices I have at present are One Core, and they drive me nuts with their weird intonation, weird, at least, to my ears. I am not the least interested in E-speak. I wouldn't mind getting one of the vocalizer packages, but there has been so much back and forth in the past about which of the two offerings is more reliable, and Eloquence isn't high  on my hit parade. The expressive high quality voices are ok. Anyway, I'm looking for something I can install that will provide voices I want to actually read books or documents with. And One Core does NOT cut it for me.

What error do you get when you try to install it?

Is it that it is not a valid install file or similar. I have seen this before and often you are basically tuck, since Windows seems to change the rules all the time.

I'm not getting any error message. K1000 comes up and gives me the option of installing with my screen reader or doing the self voicing install. I tried both ways, first with the screen reader, then when that stalled out, with the self voicing install option. That got me as far as letting me pick all the things I did or didn't want to install, e.g. which voices, which dictionaries etc. But when I finished doing that and the installation was supposedly started, nothing happened. I could hear the dvd drive. But the screen didn't show an error message at all, according to my sighted spouse. Progress bar remained empty. Dvd drive just spun and spun, or at least, it was making noise.

I've had this with older installers as well. It seems that often if you install a piece of software before updating a machine then it works and keeps working, even after a windows update, but the update stops a new install. I saw this last with an older version of the Sappi 5 drivers I had from an old Dolphin disc.

Its odd, as if an update does not like a piece of software normally it tells you and uninstalls it leaving it as an orphan on the disc. I think in this case you might need to find a support group for that software, there may be a user made hack around it.
