Note to the Membership at Large about "[SUSPECTED SPAM]" messages #advisory

First, let me state emphatically that I know that these are not generated by intent by any individual member, but are generally created as part of a spam filtering mechanism over which you have no control.  And it's fine if you respond to these if that's your only choice.

The above being said, for those who have received messages without "[SUSPECTED SPAM]" in the subject line along with those that do, please use one of the ones without that marking to launch a reply whenever possible.

I merge the ones so marked back into the original topic in the archive, and it saves me some work when there are as few of these to deal with as possible.  Direct replies to messages so marked creates more messages so marked just because it carries along.

Thanks for your attention to this.

Let me hasten to add that I *do* like cologne.  I just much prefer it as a subtle hint instead of an aromachete.

Brian's Mail list account

Hi Brian, I get the opposite issue here. I have a look in spam and find emails for various mail lists in my spam bin, even though they have been passed by the list handling system. I can only deduce that in my case Virgin, are using more aggressive tools. Often it seems to be based on the IP range the email has come from, but not always, it could be a phrase in the sub line.

Annoying.
Brian

Should we edit the subject lines if we don’t find any or will that screw things up. I generally don’t, as on the list I run it might mess things up and I tell users not to do such. I lead by example, mostly

Sarah,

I advise against ever editing subject lines unless you want to intentionally create a spin-off topic.  All it takes is a single character to be changed for a new topic to be created and that happens often enough through accidental changes to subject lines.

I'd rather do the work to merge two topics that are really a single topic than having to deal with three or four, and that has happened on rare occasion.

Right which is why I asked first.  I’m strict as heck on my lists so did not want to do that here and cause an oopsy doodle. Thanks.

Happy Tuesday.
