NVDA and Office 365 or 2021?
David Mehler
Hello,
Does the latest NVDA work with office 365 and/or office 2021? If so which is considered more accessible? Thanks. Dave. |

Hi. I don't use Office 365, but they will both be equally accessible. It doesn't matter which one you use. Thanks. From Michael. On Sat, 1 Apr 2023 at 09:32, David Mehler <dave.mehler@...> wrote: Hello, |

I have not encountered any version of Microsoft Office that has not been as close to 100% accessible with screen readers as anything can be.
Even ancient ones work well with current versions of the various screen readers. Office 2021 is in support through 2026, while Microsoft 365, being an "as a service" type subscription, is kept constantly updated to the latest versions of all the various Office programs it includes. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 22621; Office 2016, Version 16.0.15726.20188, 32-bit; Android 12 (MIUI 13) Let me hasten to add that I *do* like cologne. I just much prefer it as a subtle hint instead of an aromachete. ~ Clay Colwell |

I've used various versions of Office past their end of support dates during several periods in the past. But, since all the screen reader developers are, of necessity, focused on M365 because it's what's going to be in support for the foreseeable future, as Office 2021 looks like it's actually going to be the very last of the standalone versions of Office. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 22621; Office 2016, Version 16.0.15726.20188, 32-bit; Android 12 (MIUI 13) Let me hasten to add that I *do* like cologne. Personally I really don't like the subscription-based model of 365, maybe I'm just oldschool that way, so that's why I'm leaning toward 2021. Thanks. Dave. On 3/31/23, Brian Vogel <britechguy@...> wrote:

I decided to go back to Windows 7 and office XP, Even this combination works with nvda as it is, however, you obviously need to convert file types to be able to do anything useful, and it even warns you that certain facilities will not be present if edited in the older version.

Incidentally its amazing how slow older code was compared with the newer office. I prefer the stand alone office, since in the main, you get no surprises like an update without being told. I find myself using Libra Office Writer much more than I used to, manly because of the over complex nature of Word for everyday use I use it portably, too.

I do wish that Thunderbird would stop altering niggling things, as because I use Newsgroups its now the only game in town for using email and news with a commonish interface and offline. I've never been a fan of web based email, due to changes made with no notice and the need to be always on line. Brian -- bglists@... I understood that if you stopped paying you could still use it, it just would end updating other than severe seccurity patches if you did, but I'd imagine also come end of life, it might be more aggressive than you want.

Its getting to the point that they are inventing things to shove in, I feel. I'd prefer a model where you got all the basic software, a bit like in Works, but then have add ins to increase the features. In a way a bit like NVDA and add ons. Of course Microsoft want to earn money, and so...... Brian -- bglists@... You can get old versions of Thunderbird and tell them not to
update. I don't know how you downgrade Thunderbird and I would
suggest using Thunderbird Portable, for reasons I believe I've
discussed here before.

One other thing to bear in mind, if an issue (for our purpose largely accessibility issues, but in fact any issue) is discovered in Office, when Microsoft address it, they will include the fix in Office 365, and whatever single-purchase versions of Office come out after that point - they generally won't backport the fix for earlier versions of Office such as Office 2021. The main exceptions to this I've seen are serious security issues, but in general if XYZ isn't working with NVDA in Office 2021, if it's a bug in Office (rather than NVDA), then it likely never will. But to the original question, pretty much any modern version of Office will work fine with NVDA. There may be bugs in Office 2021 which are fixed (or will be) in newer versions of Office 365, but conversely, newer builds of Office 365 may also introduce new bugs as well. Kind regards Quentin On Sun, Apr 2, 2023 at 12:58 AM Brian Vogel <britechguy@...> wrote: On Sat, Apr 1, 2023 at 05:26 AM, Brian's Mail list account wrote: --
