Opinions regarding subgroups VS hashtags on Groups.io

Hi all,
I'm running a Groups.io NVDA users list aimed at users in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region. Currently, I've set it up so that all new messages must have a hashtag, and the user can only select a hashtag from the provided list of hashtags, for example #misc-chat for off-topic messages or #nvda-releases for news about NVDA releases.
Alternatively, I could also replace the hashtags system with subgroups, for example a dedicated subgroup for off-topic messages or for news about NVDA releases.
Between hashtags and subgroups, which do you think is more efficient when it comes to categorizing messages?

Supanut,

It's very likely six of one, half a dozen of another if you're talking about using e-mail filters to categorize and sort messages.

Personally, since hashtags are a part of the message subject, and those can be edited in subsequent back and forth responses, and I've seen this happen all the time, I would not consider this a reliable way to categorize.

Subgroup messages come from specific e-mail addresses (or at least contain same in header information) that do not change regardless of what the end user may or may not do with message subjects and/or message content.  Since user action cannot change this the categorization remains far more robust.

Subgroups, since they must be subscribed to, but can only be subscribed to by members of the main group, also allow those who want to avoid certain traffic entirely to do that.  They just don't subscribe.   All hashtagged messages from a group one subscribes to will come through, and you'd have to create filters to trash if you want to avoid them.  As hashtags proliferate, and they generally do, that becomes more work.

Hi,
Thanks for the response, those are very good points to consider indeed.

Yes I have this one account for all email lists and I use pop3 not online webmail filters. I know my limitations, so its relatively easy to make filters which sort incoming email. This subgroup is now in a folder of its own as its the general, add ons dev and github feeds as well as other non nvda lists like blindphones etc.

Again, agreed.
Actually, it was just when I came to the groups.io list that I got familiarized with the "hashtag" concept in this way. Until that time, I would think hashtags are all about Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the like.

I know \I have no idea why they opted for a system that means other things. I'd have thought some other character could be used, but then again, I'm not a twitterite or a facebookite. I use them when I have to, most of the time I block all their rubbish mail. It seems no matter how often you stop them, they reappear if you so much as dare to log in.

I personally love the hash tags. It is well organized etc. I've ben using the since the days of twitter and now I use them on my youtube and other places whre I can get more exposure on a topic or stream.

Correction, "It can be well organized."    The problem is, it very often isn't.   And I can say, definitely, it doesn't stay that way on most Groups.io groups, particularly the ones related to blindness and low-vision technology, where accidental subject modifications occur with relatively more frequency, and where if the space is taken out between a word and a hashtag the hashtag is dead.

I have nothing against hashtags, per se, though I don't love 'em, either.   But in the context of the original question, if ability to do robust classification is what's wanted then hashtags are definitely not the best way to achieve that in the context of Groups.io.

Maybe someone can take this up on GMF? I would would not even as a group owner want to try and figure out how to even fix this. Lol!

Take care and be blessed.
