question about the new email program

Rosemarie Chavarria

Hi, everyone,

I did some research on this new email program that’s supposed to be replacing the mail app. Will it be able to work with gmail? I understand right now it doesn’t work with gmail. Have you heard about this new email program?

Rosemarie,

If you have any details (e.g., articles) about this reported replacement for the Windows 10/11 Mail App, please share them.  I've not heard a thing about them.

Let me hasten to add that I *do* like cologne.  I just much prefer it as a subtle hint instead of an aromachete.

Why do you think it doesn't work with GMail?  Did you see it in a reputable article or see the statement from a reliable person?  there is an enormous amount of incorrect information on the Internet and if something sounds as though it is wrong, it probably is.  I see no reason why any standard e-mail program or app shouldn't be able to work with GMail, but I await more information before reaching a conclusion.

I think this is what we are looking for. I found this as part of the number 1 search result on google. It looks interesting but at the same time kind of, meh. I’m not interested.

Sarah,

Note the date on that article.  Project Monarch/One Outlook has been being talked about and various insiders versions released (and leaked) since 2021.  That article dates from 2022.  I found one myself dating from January - saying the same thing that all the earlier chatter did.

I have no doubt that One Outlook, or whatever they will call it by the time it hits the streets, is coming, but I have no idea when and neither, it seems, does the tech press, contrary to their breathless pronouncements.

I have no doubt that when it finally appears it will be accessible and work with any email provider.  Microsoft isn't going to shoot itself in the foot by doing otherwise, because too many people who use Microsoft's email clients and Outlook.com webmail use them to access email outside Microsoft's own ecosystem.

P.S.  If One Outlook/Project Monarch does eventually supplant the Mail App under Windows 10 and 11, you can also be reasonably certain that part of that transition will be having the installer for One Outlook automatically transition your accounts, as they stand in the Mail App, into it, along with existing messages (if someone happens to be using POP, that's not needed for IMAP or Exchange, which handle storage on the server side).

Here is the Microsoft support page for it. It is just Outlook, TBH. Works fine with Gmail. The only glitchiness is the typical issues Outlook has --irrespective of using Gmail or 365 accounts. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/getting-started-with-the-new-outlook-for-windows-656bb8d9-5a60-49b2-a98b-ba7822bc7627

That's clearly an ancient piece of documentation from the earliest beta days for the Office Insider's program, though no date is actually given on the page.  Now I see how people are getting the impression that the new Outlook (not to be confused with the existing Outlook.com or standalone Outlook email client) might not work with third party email providers.  From the page you cited, on which the following is highlighted in its own box:

Important: New Outlook for Windows supports Exchange-backed Microsoft 365 work or school accounts. Currently, the new Outlook for Windows does not support other account types like Gmail, Yahoo!, iCloud, or other account types connecting through POP/IMAP protocols. New Outlook for Windows also does not currently support On-Premises, Hybrid, or Sovereign Exchange deployments.

Obviously, that could never continue to be the situation in the final released version, but for whatever Office Insider version was being discussed there, it was.

Hi, Gene,

I did the research on duckduckgo and there was an article by microsoft. It could be misinformation so I’ll just wait and see what happens.

No one knows for certain what it will be called upon release.  My bet, among the names Microsoft itself has used, is One Outlook.  Project Monarch was the internal code name and Outlook for Windows was used during some of the insider previews that were released.  Only time will tell, though.  But one thing is certain, Microsoft is not going to drop "Outlook" from the final name.

Hi,
I saw Outlook for Windows in the Microsoft Store.
I have not tried it yet.
I read somewhere that people wasn’t happy that it was a
Web app.

If it’s a web app, I don’t think I’ll try it. I’ll probably go to something like thunderbird if they remove the mail app.

Define what "web app" means to you.

I just had a private discussion with someone else who considers many of the apps from the Microsoft Store to be "web apps" because they heavily relied heavily on the open source Electron software framework, which Microsoft has jettisoned for it's own Edge WebView 2 rendering engine.

I don't, as all sorts of things (including the Mail App, Teams, and plenty more) rely on underlying web technology but the user interface is not, in any meaningful way, contained in what any of us recognizes as or thinks of as a web browser.

If it isn't running within a web browser itself (and the one of your choosing) then it's not a web app, in my opinion.

The yet to be released new email app will be much like all the other modern Windows apps, and will not run in anything that presents as a web browser.  The Mail App is not a web app in any meaningful sense of the phrase, to me.  Neither will its replacement be.

Ironically, Thunderbird, the "alternative" to the hated web apps, is in fact the quintessential web app. It's kind of the O.G. of web apps.
It is literally and admittedly based upon, and written within, a version of Firefox.

That browser window it has isn't just there to be (in)convenient; it's a side effect of the way the thing is written.

It does not need the web to function, but then, neither do a lot of the apps written in the various webish frameworks.

Which is, itself a spin off of SeaMonkey, which still exists, but is no longer under the Mozilla Foundation's control.  They spun off Firefox and Thunderbird from it.  And now Thunderbird itself is a sort of semi-independent entity.

As you've noted, I don't know of a single person who looks at Thunderbird from the perspective of a user and thinks, "web app," even though web-related technologies are a core part of the code.

I don't go for the idea that because something pulls in other convenient libraries, functions, etc., developed for some other purpose that it makes the thing using them "that other purpose."  Web apps have to run in a web browser, pure and simple.  If it runs standalone, regardless of its container, and you cannot directly escape to the web for browsing within it, it's not a web app.

Things like webmail, many course content management systems (e.g., Moodle, Blackboard), and the like are web apps.  They are invoked within a web browser and the UI for them is entirely presented within it.  That's a web app.
