Question Regarding a Windows Notification: ControlVault Firmware Upgrade Finished/Keeps Asking Me to Restart

David Goldfield

Hi. I’m using a Dell Latitude E7270. Windows 10 Pro, version 20 H2.

A few days ago I received the following notification:

New notification from FirmwareUpgradeProgress.exe, ControlVault firmware upgrade finished.

Please restart your computer.,

This laptop does have a fingerprint reader and performing searches about this message indicated that the program in question may have to do with that component. After restarting the computer I’m still receiving this message. Search results suggest that this could be a corrupted driver which may need to be uninstalled and then reinstalled. I’d just like to know if others have some knowledge about this and if removing this driver is really the best solution. If I do this might there be any potential consequences I should consider, provided that I download the correct driver/firmware from Dell’s site.

Do you even use your fingerprint reader/facial recognition?  If not, I'd definitely not hesitate to remove and reinstall this driver.

By the way, when you say restart do you mean you've actually used the Restart option from the power menu, not Shutdown?  If Fast Startup is enabled a Shutdown and power up does not, in actuality, completely shut the machine down such that Windows 10 reloads from scratch on power up.  I doubt this is your problem, but if you haven't done a manual Restart using that option in the Power options, definitely give that a try first.

I would if it actually allowed me to authenticate reliably. The problem is that it often fails to recognize my fingerprint. Some might say that this may be part of the problem but I’ve had this laptop since December and I only started receiving the message recently. That being said if removing/reinstalling the driver won’t cause other things to fail I’m more than willing to do it. Thank you for the link.

Hi. I’ve disabled fast startup. I often liken fast startup to someone who goes to bed wearing tomorrow’s work outfit thinking that they’ll be immediately ready to head off to work the minute they wake up. Nice idea but we know that it doesn’t work that way.
