Someone sent me a .doc file that is gibberish
Brian's Mail list account
I do not have the latest singing and dancing version of office, so I wondered if there is some new format or something that means the file opens with all sorts of apparently random characters as the display. The guy, who works for RNIB assures me its just product details, so unless he has been using the Martian version of word. Any ideas?

This is a link to it. Libra Office does not work either.

Suggest you send the file back to him and ask him to try opening it again. If he can, ask what program he's using, on what operating system, and maybe in what alternative dimension.
Not only can't I get that thing to open, I can't identify its binary signature with any of the tools I have available. My guess is that it isn't word. It doesn't even pretend to be Word, except for the extension. And none of the modern singing and dancing versions of Word, as you say, would be using the .doc format willingly. Luke |

Yes tried that already. Its from RNIB, and he says its Microsoft office 365, but its on a network and he has little IT knowledge.

It is gibberish. I don't know what he did as far as creating it, but the file you linked to is garbage. And this can't be ascribed to saving back to the DOC format under Word 365, as that can be done with, at very worst, a bit of loss of formatting that's entirely specifically supported by DOCX (and that's not used all that often).
When you open a Word file and are immediately prompted to choose encoding that makes it readable you instantly know that something is very off indeed. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 22621; Office 2016, Version 16.0.15726.20188, 32-bit; Android 12 (MIUI 13) Let me hasten to add that I *do* like cologne. I just much prefer it as a subtle hint instead of an aromachete. ~ Clay Colwell |

Yes I saw that as well, I love the way it says choose the encoding that makes this file readable. The answer basically is none of them or even Libra Office.

These sort of things occur when the person at the other end is a user and does not really understand what they are doing and this inevitably ends in some kind of damage to the file.
