Thunderbird Crashing when Settings window is closed

Hi guys,
So, subject says it all.
Whenever I close my settings window, Thunderbird just will crash and the only way I found to make it work again is to restart it.

Has anyone experienced this? Any workaround or something like that?

Thanks for any and all help, as it's a rather annoying situation :)

My first, and standard, advice is to uninstall and reinstall.  I believe you can do this while retaining your existing Thunderbird profile with your accounts, etc., in them.

If you don't want to go that far first, try doing an install-over reinstall with the current version's installer, or a newer one if your Thunderbird version is not up-to-date.

I'll try that.
For backuping my Thunderbird profile, is it enough to copy to somewhere else the folder in "%Appdata%\Thunderbird"?

There is a great utility called ThunderFix which solves lots of mysterious problems that seem to have no logical explanation and this utility does not destroy any of your settings or folders in Thunderbird. It will clean up your profile and speed it up. It might even fix your crashes. http://www.parhelia-tools.com/products/thunderfix/thunderfix.aspx

Marcio,

I have typically done "install-over" installs without ever doing anything else, as Thunderbird has always preserved my user profile as part of that.  I believe that even if one chooses to uninstall Thunderbird one gets asked whether you intend to reinstall or not, and that determines whether your profile information is left behind for reuse or not.  It has been ages since I did my last uninstall, so I am working strictly off hazy memory.

Thanks. Will try Richard's suggestion and, in case it doesn't work, I will try reinstalling Thunderbird and we shall see what happens.

Do report back on whether Thunderfix lives up to it's name for you.  I try to keep track of these kinds of utilities but love to know if they're working "in the wild" as claimed.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me :(
Besides, it messed up all my settings regarding folders to each list, which means that I'll have to redo it all.

Interesting adventures, anyway.

Oh wait, apparently, it was just a matter of going to the filters and exiting it so the program could reconfigure itself.
Go figure! I'm definitely not understanding anything here anymore.

Yes I think I'd have gone down the reinstall route first cos if there are corruptions in settings, the third party tools sometimes cause more harm than good trying to reconcile data which is not in agreement.

I still have an ongoing issue which was caused by avastclear which has rendered all dialogues in dropbox desktop client silent and are only seen as pane with an exception. My feeling is that a dll has either been removed from windows or rderegistered, but so far despite the help of Dropbox and others it seems to be a windows 7 issue for those who had the virus of avast accidentally installed by ccleaner.
Anyway subject drift here, so I'll shut up.

I should've done it either, but you know, when you want to preserve things, chances are you screw them up.
Anyway, lesson learned :)
Fortunately, I managedto set up all my stuff again and it's all right now, which makes me think that at this point maybe I'm better of sticking with it as it is even with this annoyance of having to restart it whenever I change any setting.
And it may well be what I'm going to do.

You said that when you want to change more than one setting, that you have to change one setting and then when you press ok, you have to restart the program.  What settings are you working with?  In options, when you change something, you can change as many settings as you want before activating the ok button.  Wherever you are working, can you only make one change at a time or are you assuming you can, before activating the ok button?

Also, this is an excellent reason I advocate using portable versions of programs when available.  If a program becomes corrupted when using a portable version, you don't have to try to solve the problem.  Keep a backup of the program in its current state available, made when it is working properly.  then, if a problem occurs, delete the copy you are using and copy the backup to the location where the deleted program was.  It may not be reasonable for you to switch to a portable version of Thunderbird because I don't know what you can import, if anything, from the old program but I'm discussing this because it may save you and others some or a lot of work and frustration if you start using portable versions of new programs if available.  Also, in a program like Firefox, where you can import things like bookmarks, you may want to switch what you are using.

Another advantage of uusing portable programs is that if you want to use them on another computer, you can just place the program on the machine.  You don't have to worry about how to import changes you have made or material you have saved in the program.

Gene,
Actually I never thought of changing more than one setting at a time.
And also I noticed that it's not always that Thunderbird crashes, as I thought it was. So far it happened on a very specific window, that is the global addressing prefferences, or something like that since I don't know how it would be originally showed in an English version of this program.
I really don't know what's going on here.

Yes, using portable programs is indeed a good idea, I should have already started to do it.
Now, while we are on this, could you please explain to me what's the real difference between an installable and a portable version of the same program?
Because if there's no differences at all, why one should rather using an installable version instead of a portable one?

I don't know if any programs have differences or differences that matter.  I haven't looked into the question.  But I doubt that in most cases, there are any differences that matter, if any.  Firefox is identical in terms of capabilities.  I don't know about Thunderbird, but I suspect it is as well.

Portable programs make no changes in the system.  They don't do anything with the registry, for example.  They save changes in the program itself, as I think programs should do whether portable or not.

As to why people do what they do, I have no idea.  A lot of users may not even know about portable versions of programs as an option and they may not be aware of why it would be an advantage to use them even if they know they exist.

To be honest, I have just had an issues when servicing things and someone was using a uk language with a uk board and nvda just wouldn't install, the keyboard was messed up to and I was this close to reformatting.

However I removed the language, and installed us, and it went fine.

I have just had to remove avg tuneup and avast, I havn't used dropbox on the system and its not on here so I won't use it.

Sadly a reformat is the only way to get rid of the avast virus.

If anyone has issues with the avast virus, please let piriform know.

Their support people said that if enough people have bad experiences with avast and its accessibility and other issues that they would concidder removing it from their installers.

There are slim and portables about and due to the inaccessible nature of the control panel I am using portables which guess what means apart from no monitering and stuff now I can carry my settings about, set it on 1 unit and everyone can leach off my master file.

Richard,
WOW! Thanks a lot for this one! I will surely try it!
How you found this site? I saw they have some other interesting
applications, some of which I downloaded.

Cheers,

There is a great utility called ThunderFix which solves lots of
mysterious problems that seem to have no logical explanation and this
utility does not destroy any of your settings or folders in
Thunderbird. It will clean up your profile and speed it up. It might
even fix your crashes.

My first, and standard, advice is to uninstall and reinstall. I
believe you can do this while retaining your existing Thunderbird
profile with your accounts, etc., in them.

If you don't want to go that far first, try doing an install-over
reinstall with the current version's installer, or a newer one if
your Thunderbird version is not up-to-date.
