What's up with Goldwave 6.75?

JM Casey

Hey all.

A while ago Sean posted a message about goldwave triggering Defender or something with a false positive. I could not reproduce this, but after running the programme last night, they’ve definitely … done something to it.

The control keyboard assignments seem to be mostly gone, although record and play keys (f2 to play all, ctrl-f9 to record) still work “out of the box”. You can now access the control functions from the menu bar, as in, it’s a menu, which – ok, I guess, but not exactly what I want. There seemed to be some other strangeness as well. I thought maybe the keyboard problem was just the result of some install error or me somehow deleting something without being aware of it, so I tried setting back to defaults – they were still gone. I then reinstalled version 6.75. Still nothing. I was on the point of just re-creating the keys I use, as inconvenient as it was, when I realised I had a version of 6.38 on a drive somewhere, so I just installed that version. Now, everything works as it should.

I searched the web and saw nobody complaining as yet.

What gives though? Anybody else experienced this? Not sure if this started with 6.75 or a slightly earlier version that maybe I didn’t install, but I do remember seeing something about a “new control window” or something like that in the change log. Seems they’ve broken keyboard assignments that have been there for years and years. I really did not have time to mess with this yesterday so was pretty unhappy with this nasty surprise. I’ve been using this programme for so  many years, that at this point I just expect it to work.

Hmmm.

Well I emailed what was going on to goldwave and what defender found.

I installed the update yesterday on another computer and it did not trigger.

The menu bar works, try rebooting and see.

I don't know about keyboard assignments.

Hey.

I rebooted first thing. No. reinstalled 6.75. No. Installed old version. Now all is good.

The menu bar in 6.75 works, but it has a new item “control”, which pulls down the same items that can be found in the control window, I think. The keystrokes for rewind, fast forward, pause, stop, and possibly some other thigns simply aren’t there. They don’t appear in the keyboard assignments list. They do in 6.38; I could instantly see the difference.

That is a bad move. Seems a bit silly to remove them or at least not provide a toggle for them to be on or not. I do hope all current Goldwave version users send them a complaint. It should be stressed that its a usability feature for many people who use it daily.
As I said elsewhere, I use the old 32 bit version but suspect this may now not work on future versions of Windows.
