Whatsapp on PC

Chris Mullins

Hi

I have no experience of social media apps at all but have been asked by friends to investigate Whatsapp for PC.  I do not have a mobile phone either but I have noticed references on the internet saying “Use Whatsapp without a smart phone”, so believe it is possible.  There is also the accessibility using NVDA question, so I thought I would ask the NVDA community if there is anyone can give me some pointers as to how to go about getting Whatsapp working on my laptop and accessing it using NVDA and without a smart phone.

Cheers

I think you need it on the phone first but I maybe wrong. Not sure how accessible it is as only used it once about 6 months ago or more and it was ok but a bit of a task to get around if you had many chats.

Whatsapp is available as a standalone app under iOS, Android, and Windows.

It can also be used as a web app on any of those platforms.

See:  https://www.whatsapp.com/download/

I cannot speak to accessibility as I avoid most social media or social media adjacent apps like the plague.

I think Whatsapp though is quite a lot easier to use, at least on the phone, than social media, its more like text messaging but includes video and voice calling and can be limited to either one person or a group defined by you. There are sometimes too many options to keep track of however and it can get confusing if a multi person private chat is in use, since the time line gets a bit confusing.
I notice that gradually BBC are preferring it over text messages and twitter. Because its free its better than texts, which cost you several pence to send to the corporation, but Whatsapps are free, and as I say, Twitter a mess.
Mastodon seems to be te way most of my blind friends are going these days, but once again, it may well not have the problems of Twitter but it does need, in my view a bit more tech knowledge to make it work. I like yourself feel its a step too far unless you have a lot of spare hours to fill

When I installed it on my computer I had to use my phone to activate it that is all I was meaning.

Not sure if that is still the case or not but had to use the phones camera to get the code on the screen or something like that.
