Then for the love of heaven, teach her CTRL + ALT + N to turn NVDA on!  This is not any more difficult than NVDA + Q, followed by confirming exit to shut it down.

A very good chunk of my clients are seniors.  They can, and do, learn, particulary something this direct.  Until the issue is resolved, this is a lifeline for her.
