I'm not sure what you are doing.  You don't use the space bar at all. Open the context menu, down arrow to preferences and press enter.

When you open the context menu, you are opening the identical menu as with NVDA key n.  You down arrow to preferences exactly as you do when you open the menu in the way you usually do and work with it in exactly the same way.  You never use the space bar in a menu, no matter how you open it.
