You use the context menu key.  You should hear what you always hear, NVDA menu.  That is what the context menu key opens when you are on the NVDA icon.  If you don't hear that, then are you sure what is int the usual place of the context menu key actually is a context menu key?  You can't assume.

If the context menu key doesn't do what it should, thus implying it is something else on the internal keyboard, try shift f10.

Hi Gene

I did not press the space bar, I was informing you that I use the 'context menu' key near the space bar. Perhaps you'd advise me not to do that? Therefore, when I get to the NVDA icon, how do I open the 'context menu' you mention - this seems to be the important step I am getting wrong. I do appreciate your time helping me with this, thanks.

I'm not sure what you are doing.  You don't use the space bar at all. Open the context menu, down arrow to preferences and press enter.

When you open the context menu, you are opening the identical menu as with NVDA key n.  You down arrow to preferences exactly as you do when you open the menu in the way you usually do and work with it in exactly the same way.  You never use the space bar in a menu, no matter how you open it.

Hi Gene

I press Windows B and then arrow up to find NVDA, but when I press the context menu key along from the space bar, I only get the usual list of options such as describe image and so on. What am I doing wrong, please?

Move to the system tray, Windows key b.
Move to the NVDA icon and open the context menu.
then proceed as you normally would to the keyboard layout. Just as when you open the NVDA menu with the insert key, you are opening exactly the same menu this way.

Just put NVDA on new laptop, but there's no insert key. How do I set 'shift lock' as the key - as I can't get to the NVDA settings, as far as I know without doing insert, control and N?
