This sounds daunting! However, you may be right and I can only try it.

 

The lock up happens erratically. In other words, I cannot trigger it in a planned way. This means that I cannot be sure that the problem is solved after running any of the steps that you recommend.

 

When it does happen, of course, I will not be able to operate at all!

Definitely try:

1. Using DISM (Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management) and SFC (System File Checker) to Repair Windows 8.1, 10 & 11
2. Doing an offline Office Repair install.
3. Doing an online Office Repair install
4. Performing a Windows 10 or 11 Repair Install or Feature Update Using the Windows ISO file

Stop after any given step cures the issue.  If none of those work, then involvement of tech support of a more heavy-duty type is in the cards.
