It would be interesting to know if the person reporting the problem
uninstalled one or more programs immediately before this problem started and
what they were. My suspicion is that that is likely.

That is the main reason the registry fixing tool needs to be run, because
some programs, when uninstalled, cause this problem.

I chose to ignore this because the issue was "more widespread," but that is
a very, very valid point with regard to Office.

There is a reason that the group rules explicitly state: Unsupported
versions of any software may only be discussed on the Chat Subgroup, not the
main NVDA Group.

I am waiting, patiently, holding my breath for the official dropping of
support for Windows 7 by NVDA. It is long, long, long overdue. For
heaven's sake, Windows 8.1 is now officially out of support, too, and we're
8 years into the Windows 10 era.

I also just updated the Welcome/Rules message dropping Windows 8.1 out of
the "currently supported" list of Windows OSes, too.
