Re: getting information about the focused file

I use the laptop layout and my keyboard does not even seem to have a way to
generate a keypad. What are the laptop keyboard equivalents for NVDA+numpad
7 and 8?

Thanks.

Dean

Hi!

Press NVDA+NumPad7 and then NumPad8.

I can play with the reading tool tips option when I find it. It is not
complicated: When one presses the JAWS speak line key while focused on a
file in windows Explorer, the screen reader reads out all the details for
that file. When arrowing through the list, these details are not spoken, so
one has an easy quick way to get the details when one wants them, otherwise
they aren't heard. I have pretty much resigned myself to the fact that this
convenience isn't available with NVDA, but the information is easy to come
by.

I don't know what the Jaws keys are doing, but allowing nvda to read tool
tips etc can make the file info more verbose.

It would help if we knew what sort of info was required.

if you hit alt enter on a file folder or what ever it will give you loads
of information hope this helps.

Hello. I've joined here for a while because I need to be able to
encourage those who can't afford JAWS to try NVDA. I am also trying to
see if I can join the company of those who actually believe NVDA is as
good as or better than JAWS. I like and know JAWS, but would be happy
to be persuaded that NVDA is a truly equal option. I use the laptop
layout, have installed ObjPad and some other add-ons.

When viewing a folder in windows Explorer, with detail view active, I
can quickly catch file details that might interest me, perhaps the size
or date created, by hitting the current line keystroke in JAWS twice.
I've read some documentation and played with likely keystrokes and have
not found a way to do this with NVDA. Is there a way?

I'll post other questions in separate messages.

Thanks.
