Try the following
In mozilla fire fox go to tools then down to add ons then press the enter key.
You might have to tab a couple of times, but you will be looking for a list. here you can arrow up and down the list.
There are 2 sections one was check the extensions and also the plugins section.
Go to the say add ons or extensions one then tab a couple of times. On both of them you can disable the players from starting automatically.
so depending what you have it might be a html 5 player, flash player, shock wave player. etc
You can always enable them again from there. But i think at present it will only do it when i want it to.
