I think those who ask for this are talking laptops really and that is the problem mentioned. you really would like to turn off the monitor completely in software to emulate what we do on a desktop with a button or not even connect one.
That is not possible.
Maybe its something that can be designed into hardware, but I'd not expect mainstream companies to do this unless its as a power saving feature when streaming audio.

Well you don't need a screen to have a screen reader.

You need a graphics chip to have a screen reader but weather you need to have it connected to anything is another thing.

You do need a sound card and a graphics chip else all those desktops I service I would have toh ave a screen.

Its true if you have to deal with the mouse or graphical software that doesn't play nice with your graphics to translation text viewing reading software, then sure.

But you don't need a screen as such.

Is there a keyboard shortcut with NVDA to invoke a screen curtain (blank screen while you are working – for privacy purposes)? Narrator has a shortcut – Capslock/Shift/F12. I heard yesterday that JAWS has a similar command – Insert/Spacebar, then PrintScreen. Neither of these work when I’m using NVDA. Anyone know of a NVDA screen curtain shortcut. Con’t really want to do it by turning brightness to zero. Thanks.
