Thanks Larry J.  I don’t think we’ll go for Vocalizer Expressive just yet…

Best,

Diana.

Hi Diana,

If you use vocalizer expressive , just enable Detect text language based on unicode characters (experimental)  check box  in  Vocalizer Expressive  sub Menu  -> Automatic Language Switching Settings. Then set voices for English and Chinese ..

Hi Larry & Jacob,

Thanks for your instructions and patience.

Still no luck unfortunately. I do have Automatic-language-switching turned on. I tried to set-up 3 voices for 3 different slots. This works fine each time. However, after each voice set-up, everything is read out in that new voice and in English (including the desktop). Webpages in English are read by the new voice but no Chinese text on webpages in Chinese are read. It seems that only 1 voice is ‘active’ each time.

My Mum may have to do with NVDA reading in English only. Plus I live a long way away and have less than 48 hours left here…

Best wishes,

Diana.

Bear in mind that you will want to do something like activate a speech slot, then make changes to voice output settings, before then saving those settings for later use.

For example, I would press NVDA + ctrl + shift + 1, then use nvda + ctrl + s to bring up synthesizer dialogue, make a choice, and then use nvda + ctrl + v to bring up the voice settings, make a choice, and voice setting changes, and then hit nvda + ctrl + shift + v to save the current settings to the previously selected slot.

You would then repeat these steps, choosing a different slot each time, to have multiple switch synth combinations available/configured.

And, while it may suit some people, I will mention that one of the reasons I leave any form of automatic language switching turned off is since web developers don't always pay attention to what they should have set a web-page's underlying language to, and, that's one of the triggers that something like that would react to...<smile>

Stay well

Hi Diana,

Preferred settings means the synth settings you need to switch between. To configure speech settings, open NVDA menu and go to Preferences -> Settings... -> Speech. If your mum needs automatic switching between English and Mandarin ,try vocalizer expressive on https://vocalizer-nvda.com/

As for OCR ,add a Chinese keyboard layout in Windows language settings and Windows will download data for Chinese OCR and install it. It may take a few minutes.

Hi Larry,

Yes, the add-on is loaded and enabled ok. And I hear “three” with Ctrl+Shift+NVDA+3, “four” with Ctrl+Shift+NVDA+4, “five” and “six”. I don’t see where to configure Preferred setting though.

BTW in Settings / Windows 10 OCR, the Recognition language is English but there’s an option for Chinese.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Diana,

Is this addon enabled and loaded successfully? If so.

After pressing NVDA+Ctrl+Shift+3  if the slot is empty ,you will hear three. Then you can config a preferd setting.Press NVDA+Ctrl+Shift+V ,you will hear "Saved".Repeat this procedure on other slots  then  synth setting will be switched to corresponding slot after press certain hotkey.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for your reply.

I can’t switch to a slot to configure synth settings. Ctrl+Shift+NVDA+1 does nothing, nor Ctrl+Shift+NVDA+2 to Ctrl+Shift+NVDA+6. I tried this in the Add-ons Manager, same thing. Any other suggestions?

Will bookmark nvdacn.com for my mum (I don’t read Chinese).

Its documentation is quite straightforward.Switch to a slot.Configure synth settings. Press NVDA+Ctrl+Shift+V to save.

You can also go to nvdacn.com for more Mandarin related contents.

Hi,

I am new to NVDA. It looks like a great tool for my mum who is in her 70s and losing her sight. She is bilingual (English-Mandarin) and I have installed Switch Synth 1.02 (https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/switchSynth.en.html) together with NVDA on her pc.

Can anyone help with configuration instructions?

Thank you.

Diana Kwok.
