Avast is a much better thought of program than Windows Defender or MSSE.  You shouldn't have more than one antivirus program running simultaneously.  Windows Defender is more accessible but you said you are already using Avast so you evidently know how to use it, despite the accessibility difficulties. 
 
If you are asking which program to use, that's for you to decide.  But, as I said, Avast is considered far superior.
