When using the much more computer Intensive newer synthesizer voices, this would indeed slow a system, especially a low resource or already slow one.  But voices like Eloquence don't use much in the way of resources.  Eloquence was responsive even on my ancient 166MHZ Windows 95 machine.  On modern computers in general, I would think using Eloquence or some other older style synthesizer would be unnoticeable or almost unnoticeable in terms of how computer performance is affected.

It also can for musicians who need the decent soundcard for other
stuff, but, hw synths are rapidly going the way of the dodo bird.
