The beeps are great in my situation! At least I know something is happening on screen when updating or downloading.

No, what he is asking is the speach mode beeps. I have used it when I
wnt to know somethingn is happenign quickly but don't want to know what
it is. But I don't use it often.

You've already been told about using NVDA+S (typically INS+S, if
using desktop keyboard layout) to toggle the NVDA Speech state.

I also wanted to mention the

add on, which does exactly what its name implies: eliminates the
"beeps speech" mode, which I never found in the least way useful. I
