Traditional SMS text messages I think can only contain text, as in only original ASCII characters.  Most phones and networks automatically convert messages with emoji (or with photos attached etc) to MMS messages in order to send them.

For E-Mail, I haven't looked lately, but the same may apply for sending "plain text" messages.
