I think this subject can be solved by the use of NVDA only, as opposed to any screen reader, so the user cannot be faulted from posting to the list.

NVDA, by default, reads the notifications, that used to be called toasts. Turning off the reading of these notifications using the report notifications checkbox in the object presentation settings can allow NVDA to not report them, but they will still show up on screen. If your students are sighted, this might not be the right option, but it is certainly one of them.

Of course, you could just turn on Focus Assist in Windows 10 itself (if using that OS)
