You are likely hearing NVDA automatically switching
to forms mode and back to browse mode. I think that is a very bad default
setting, both in terms of hearing sounds and not hearing verbal notifications
instead.
In the browse mode dialog which you can open with
NVDA key control b, if you want verbal notifications when you switch between
modes, change the checkbox to unchecked with the space bar for audio
notification of browse and focus mode, or very similar wording.
If you don't want automatic switching between modes
as you move down a page, uncheck the checkboxes for Automatic focus mode for
caret movement and Automatic focus mode for focus changes.
