Couldn't the NVDA Mozilla apps enhancement add-on include some sort of fix to stop this until Mozilla gets around to removing the tag causing the problem? There would be no logical reason to create code that "fixes" something that can be worked around simply by disabling it for the time being using available controls. And anyone who needs to shut up the status bar should simply disable it for now, until the fix already made gets pushed out to Thunderbird.
