Sorry for the mistake, I was so irritated with the announcements that I posted to the wrong list.

Anyway, go to Tools, Options, General, and navigate to the level 1 heading "incoming messages". Right below that are checkboxes that tell Thunderbird how you want to be notified when new mail arrives. One of them is "play a sound".
