eSpeak does read them, if you arrow character by character, but they read as "letter 16CA", i.e. the hex values of the Unicode characters.
That addon actually did the trick, it read it and put a copy in the dictionary, so now they show up as a user. I'd still like the actual characters, but I guess I can generate them myself and make a bunch of dictionary entries. I kind of feel like I shouldn't have to, I'd think you could algorithmically name the Unicode characters, but I guess not.
