Totally agree but, unless you buy from a specialist supplier who will make the change for you, the function keys tend to be re-mapped...at least, any laptop I've bought has been that way and it's generally a real pain to get them reset as it means a bios change.

Indeed, on a laptop.  But I am willing, given the context we're dealing with on a screen reader users group, to presume that any "media keys" mapping of the function keys will be turned off as a part of system setup straight out of the box.  As a result, I wasn't even taking that into account (but it should be, as it would be very common among the sighted where media keys are not turned off, but not here).
