Re: NVDA announcing Capital letters

I'm not sure if what I was saying was clear.  I'm not saying you are wrong that the synthesizer is saying capital when it sees a capital letter.  I'm saying that it is implausible that that is its normal behavior because I would think that would be a serious bug and we would have heard about it a long time ago.  So what is going on with the add-on that is causing this behavior?  It may be some sort of combination of the synthesizer and the add-on.

And I note with interest that in the message from Don, having NVDA set to say cap says cap instead of capital.  Why doesn't the synthesizer say cap capital since NVDA is sending the word cap to the synthesizer and the synthesizer is seeing a capital letter.  I see no justification for NVDA to change what it is doing for a problem with one add-on and one synthesizer.  Also, are their implications to the change we don't know?

But this is a problem with one add-on.  I'm not saying it isn't sending capital letters and I wasn't questioning that.  I was saying that we don't know why this problem is occurring since we don't know of any other cases where it is.  I am also saying that I very much doubt that the synthesizer itself generally announces cap because if it did, this would be such a serious bug that no one would buy it and we would have heard about this a long time ago.  And only two  reports doesn't tell us if this is a general problem or not.

Hi Gene,

We do know, because if we look at speech viewer, we can see that NVDA is still sending upper case letters, even when caps is off. The solution for all synths would be, in my view, to send all single letters as lower case, when this option is turned off.

I don't think we know enough about the problem to do more than speculate.  I doubt this behavior occurs when Vocalizer is used not with the add-on.  So what is it about the combination of Vocalizer and the add-on that causes this problem?  Also, since we've seen only something like two reports of the problem, we don't know if it is a general one.

And since a lot of people use a synthesizer like Vocalizer for reading and a synthesizer like Eloquence for work, we don't know how many people are affected by the problem.  Is the problem only reported by two people because a lot of people don't use Vocalizer in ways where the problem would show up or is it not a problem for most users?

It is part and part.

When the synth sees an upper case letter, it says the word capital, which is correct of course.

Even if you turn off capitals in NVDA, it still throws upper case letters.

So the fix in NVDA would be that NVDA should send all letters entered via the keyboard as lower case irrespective of their case, if that setting is switched off.

In this case, I think the synth is right, and NVDA is wrong, but what do I know.

I contacted Code Factory and they said it was a NVDA issue. So I don't think anything will be done anytime soon to fix the problem.

Hello,

I have the beep option checked but I get no sound when I type.

when caps are typed.

I do not like the word caps spoken as I can’t hear what I am typing.
What am I missing?
