What Symbol level have you set for NVDA to speak?

What are the values for level and preserve for both

The sentence ending and symbol entries for the exclamation mark in the Punctuation/Symbol dialog?

I asked these questions when you originaly posted the issue but did not see a reply.

I made an error in the below message.  I said to shift arrow once to the filter by field.  I meant to say shift tab once.

Are you talking about when you are moving through a document character by character or typing or actually listening to a line of text being read?  If you are typing, you will hear punctuation if you have character echo on because that is what you type.  It doesn't matter what level of punctuation you have anything set for.  The same with moving buy letter through a document.  Its in moving by word, reading phrases, lines, or reading a whole document that these settings matter. 

 

If you don't know how to work with the punctuation/symbol pronunciation dialog, I'll describe it here.

You get to it in preferences.  Once you open it you are in a list of everything.

Shift arrow once. 

You are in a field that says filter by.
Type what you are looking for, in this case the exclamation point symbol.

Tab once to the list.

You will see any entry dealing with the exclamation point.

If you don't want anything spoken, up and down arrow to select an entry and tab to where you see something like none, some, most, or all.  If you set the item to all, using the up or down arrow key to move there, you won't hear the item spoken except when punctuation is set to all. 

Return to the list, move to another entry and do the same thing.  Continue until every entry is set to all.

Tab to and activate the OK button.

Evidently, you want some punctuation announced but not the exclamation point.  Set the exclamation point in the punctuation/symbol pronunciation dialog to all.  That way, it will only be announced when you have punctuation set to all.  If you already have punctuation set to all, I haven't played with this to any extent.  I'll play with it if that is the case.  But if you set it to all and your punctuation reading level is set to most, some, or none, you won't hear it.  If you don't know how to do that, ask.

Serious question:  Are you trying to get it to be entirely silent, or are you looking for something like "bang" to be announced for exclamation mark when moving letter by letter?

Gene is right in that the punctuation/symbols dialog is what's used to control this, but the exact tweaking would depend on precisely what it is you're trying to accomplish.
