I can't answer the first question, as I purchased the book yesterday and Kindle updated automatically when I opened it to read the book.
As for the second part of the message, yes, it probably would have been helpful, but it didn't occur to me, because I was unaware of the issue surrounding advanced typesetting, so I didn't know to look for it.
Were you able to navigate through this book before the V1.36 update?
It would have been helpful if you had mentioned that you can read most of the other books in your library in your previous message because this provides a clue as to what may be happening.
Check the book listing on the Kindle Web site and see if enhanced typesetting is listed as being disabled.
If it is then this may be the reason for the issue.
