This isn't NVDA's default state. At some point you hit the toggle for Input Help Mode, NVDA + 1, which, when toggled on, "Pressing any key in this mode will report the key, and the description of any NVDA command associated with it"
Just hit NVDA + 1 (and that's one on the number row of the main keyboard) again and it will stop.
